The Background Suppression feature

The Background Suppression feature has four selections:
Selection
Off
Background suppression is disabled. Use this setting for
documents that have a lead edge quite different from the
rest of the document. For example: the lead edge
contains a black border. This mode is automatically
selected when Photo is selected as the Original Type.
Contrast may still be adjusted by pressing the Image
Quality - Copy keys.
Light
Use this setting for documents with colored or translucent
background, with higher contrast between foreground and
background than Dark documents, but less contrast than
normal documents.
Use this setting for documents with dark background, or
Dark
with medium contrast between foreground and
background.
Scanner samples the first 0.7 in. (1.78 cm) of the
Auto
document and assumes that the rest is similar. The entire
image is enhanced, based on the characteristics of the
sample. This setting is best for most documents.
