7.1 Preparing for data migration

In this section, we show you how to prepare external storage systems and IBM Flex System
V7000 Storage Node for data migration. Data migration is always an important step when
setting up new storage systems in an existing storage infrastructure.
Before attaching any external storage systems to IBM Flex System V7000 Storage Node, see
the IBM Flex System V7000 Storage Node support matrix at the following website:
http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/support/storage/ssic/interoperability.wss
Also, always check for supported hardware and driver versions at the IBM System Storage
Interoperation Center (SSIC):
http://ibm.com/systems/support/storage/ssic/interoperability.wss
If you need a quick reference for IBM Flex System Interoperability, see the IBM Flex System
Interoperability Guide, REDP-FSIG.
When migrating data from an external storage system to IBM Flex System V7000 Storage
Node, you can temporarily configure the external virtualization license setting to allow for
migration. Configuring this setting can prevent messages from being sent to indicate that you
are in violation of the license agreement. However, when the migration is complete, the
external virtualization license must be reset back to its default limit via the IBM Flex System
V7000 Storage Node management GUI, Settings  General  Licensing  External
Virtualization.
External storage: When external storage is virtualized by IBM Flex System V7000
Storage Node, a per-enclosure external virtualization license is required. Contact your IBM
account team or IBM Business Partner for further assistance, if required. For further details
on licensing, see 2.4, "IBM Flex System V7000 Storage Node licensing" on page 46.
As part of the preparation work for data migration, external storage systems must be
configured on IBM Flex System V7000 Storage Node. Perform the following steps to
complete this task:
1. Stop host/compute node I/O to the external storage LUNs that you plan to migrate.
2. Remove the zoning setup that exists between the hosts and the external storage system
from which you are migrating.
3. Update your host device drivers, including your multipath driver, and configure them for
attachment to the IBM Flex System V7000 Storage Node system.
4. Create a new storage system zone between the external storage system being migrated
and the IBM Flex System V7000 Storage Node system.
5. Create a host zone between the compute node/host and then IBM Flex System V7000
Storage Node for the host attachment.
6. Unmap the LUNs on the external storage system to the host and map them to the IBM
Flex System V7000 Storage Node system.
7. Verify that IBM Flex System V7000 Storage Node can discover the mapped LUNs and see
them as unmanaged MDisks.
8. Create host definitions on IBM Flex System V7000 Storage Node, and map unmanaged
MDisks to them.
