Tips and Techniques
• Place a safety shield in front of the COD reactor to prevent injury if splattering occurs.
• A reagent blank is required for each series of samples.
• Wipe the outside of sample cells before each insertion into the instrument cell holder. Use a damp towel followed by a dry one to
remove fingerprints or other marks.

Turn on the COD
reactor.
Heat to 103–105 °C.

For water, drinking water, and wastewater

Use a graduated
cylinder to add 10 mL of
sample to a 50-mL
Erlenmeyer flask that
contains a stir bar.

paper to make sure the
sample pH is 2.
