Appendix A: If This Is Your First Digital Console
There are two important considerations when converting analog to digital signal, or vice versa. The first of
these is the sample rate, which determines how frequently "snapshots" of the signal are stored and reproduced.
The standard CD sample rate, for example, is 44.1 kHz, which means that 44,100 samples are stored or played
back every second. Another standard sample rate used in DATs and other professional recorders is 48 kHz.
These sample rates are capable of capturing and reproducing virtually all of the frequency range of human hear-
ing, from about 20 Hz (20 cycles per second) to about 20 kHz (20,000 cycles per second). (See Figure 3)
