SMART DRIVE TRANSMISSION
VKA/VLA/VYA TYPES
1. MOWER WILL NOT SELF-PROPEL WHEN THE SMART DRIVE IS ENGAGED
a. Inspect the drive belt, transmission input shaft, Smart
Drive cable, and pulley condition.
b. Inspect the transmission control arm, and return
spring. Replace as necessary.
c. Verify the transmission pivots and the control arm
moves when rotating the Smart Drive control.
• If the control arm does not move, adjustment isn't the

the upper end, or the upper roller is out of the helix slot.

b. Inspect the belt and both pulleys for damage. With the
Smart Drive control engaged, confirm that the
transmission pulley is tight and not slipping on the
input shaft.
c. Position the mower on a smooth concrete surface.
d. Start the engine and firmly engage the Smart Drive
control while holding the lawn mower from moving
forward. The rear wheels should spin (slip) on the
concrete surface.
If the wheels intermittently stop and/or a clicking sound
can be heard, inspect the pinion gears and ratchets
(P.
2-20).
If both wheels stop, the drive belt may be worn or
damaged and belt replacement is necessary.
