9. BATTERY BOX
VLA TYPE
REMOVAL/INSTALLATION
The lawn mower engine has a self-charging
system. Under normal mowing usage, it is not
necessary to charge or maintain the battery.
1. Remove the three cover retaining screws
and the battery cover.
2. Disconnect the battery connector, and then
remove the battery.
3. Disconnect the key switch connector, 3 A
fuse and 30 A SLO-BLO fuse. Pull the wire
harness and connectors from the retainers.
4. Remove the 6 x 35 mm bolt and washer
holding the battery box to the handlebar.
Remove the steel collar.
5. Remove the nut and washer holding the key
switch in place. Remove the switch base
and key switch.
Installation is in the reverse order of removal.
Carefully position the battery in the case without pinching the wires. The wires must be routed above the top side of
the battery exactly as shown.
There is an optional battery float charger and adapter harness that can be connected to
the battery charge port connector located on the right handle stay.
1. Disconnect the charge port connector on the handle, below the recoil starter rope
grip.
2. Locate the battery charger adapter harness, and connect the adapter harness into
the charge port connector that is closest to the battery.
3. Insert the connector on the Honda battery charger into the other end of the adapter
harness.
4. Plug the charger into a standard 120 volt AC power outlet and let the battery charge.
The charger may become slightly warm during charging, this is normal. The float
charger can be left connected continuously when the lawn mower is not in use.

After charging the battery, disconnect the adapter harness
from the charge port connector, and then firmly reconnect
the charge port connectors on the handle together. The
adapter harness may be left connected to the battery
charger when not in use.
NOTICE
Battery will not charge properly when the handle is folded and the battery is upside side down.
