Important:
Ensure that you run software release 7.1 or later for the 8800 series modules to operate
properly. The 8812XL however, requires at minimum, software release 7.1.3 to operate
properly.
All 8800 series modules support jumbo frames. The 8800 series modules are not compatible
with the 8001AC and 8002DC power supplies. You must use either the 8004 or 8005 type
power supplies in a chassis that contains 8800 series modules. For proper system cooling,
8800 series modules require high-speed cooling modules.
The 8800 series modules can interoperate with R and RS modules. Ensure that there is enough
power available for all modules in the chassis (including redundancy requirements), using the
power calculation tool. You can find the calculator at
the ERS 8800/8600 documentation.
Thorough engineering testing indicates that starting from release 7.1, RS modules can be
replaced with their 8800 series equivalents with no loss of configuration. For example, you can
replace an 8648GTRS module with an 8848GT module, on a chassis, with no loss of
configuration.
Important:
You can only replace a module with another module of the same type. For example, you
cannot replace a 48– port copper module with a fiber module. You can replace a copper
module with another copper module, or a fiber module with another fiber module.

Chassis slots and modules

Slots in the 8006 and 8010 chassis are numbered from the top, starting with slot 1. Slots in the
8010co chassis are numbered from left to right, starting with slot 1. Slots in the 8003-R chassis
are numbered from the top, starting with slot 1.
In the 8006, 8010, and 8010co chassis, slots 5 and 6 are reserved for SF/CPU modules. You
can install supported Ethernet Routing Switch 8800/8600 modules in the remaining chassis
slots. In the 8003-R chassis, slot 3 is reserved for SF/CPU modules. You can install supported
Ethernet Routing Switch 8800/8600 modules in the remaining chassis slots.
You can add or replace a module with the switch power on or off.
