6. Checking drained oil
Whenever a problem is suspected in either
the middle or final gear assemblies, drain
and inspect the oil. Metal particles on the
drain plug or in the oil could indicate a bear-
ing seizure or other problem. However, a
small amount of metal particles in the oil is
normal.

Final gear removal

1. Remove the rear axle and the rear wheel
(see "REAR WHEEL" section in this Chap-
ter).
2. Remove
the four
holding the final drive unit to the swing arm.
3. Remove the final gear assembly.

Gear lash check and adjustment

4. Secure the gear case in a vise or other sup-
port.
5. Remove one nut from the final gear case
stud. Install the final gear holding tool over
the ring gear surface and stud. Tighten
the holder to the stud with a nut.

6. Install the final gear lash measurement tool
on the gear coupling.
7. Mount a dial gauge against the lash meas-
urement tool at the scribed mark (60mm
[2.36 in] from the center of the shaft).
8. Gently rotate the gear coupling back and
forth. Note the lash measurement on the dial
gauge.
Final gear lash:
0.25 ~ 0.50mm (0.010 ~ 0.020 in):
When using the measurement tool.
0.1. ~ 0.2mm (0.004 ~ 0.008 in):
Actual gear lash on the final gear teeth.
