4.3 – Troubleshooting Steps
The goal is to make a precise diagnostic of the problem, in order to determine the faulty unit, or to
apply corrective actions to avoid the problem to reappear.
4.3.1 – Define the symptom
This is generally made by the field technician : common symptoms are " the link is broken", there are
excessive transmission errors", "there are alarms", ...
These symptoms may be permanent (failure) or intermittent. Using monitoring graphical log may be
very useful when searching transient phenomenas (see chapter 3 section 3.3.3.3).
4.3.2 – Isolate the problem
Once the symptom has been defined, the faulty unit can be isolated using LED Indicators and
SAGEM LINK F Pilot informations.
SAGEM-LINK F replacement units are the ODU, the IDU or the cable interface module. A 1+0 link is
composed of 6 units. The goal of this step is to determine what is the most probable unit to replace.
In some cases, the problem may be generated by the remote terminal, by external equipments (power
supply, bad interface signal levels...) or by the external environment (path obstruction, radio
interferers, severe climatic conditions,...).
4.3.3 – Fix the problem
Once the problem has been isolated, it is important to understand the cause of the problem and to
apply corrective actions to avoid the problem to reappear.
Some typical radio links problems are presented in the following sections in this chapter.
4.4 – Alarms and Status Indication LED
The IDU Front panel, and cable interface module(s) have the following LEDs :

• The orange "Maint" status LED flashes during a maintenance operation, like a tributary
loopback or a manual control of the protection switches.
•
The "Mux" alarm LED lights red, when there is multiplexer or a demultiplexer failure, or when
receive data is not recovered (link broken)
•
The "Tribs" alarm LED lights red, if there is a lack of input signal on a tributary configured as
normal, or if there is an input signal on a tributary configured as inverted.
•
The "Cust" alarm LED lights red, if there is a custom alarm (see chapter 3 section 3.3.2.1 for
description).
