Overview of ARP
IP logical network addresses are independent of physical addresses. The physical address must be used to
convey data in the form of a frame from one device to another. Therefore, a mechanism is required to
acquire a destination device hardware address from its IP address. This mechanism is called ARP
(Address Resolution Protocol).
The ARP table
The ARP table stores pairs of IP and MAC addresses. This storage saves time and communication costs,
since the host looks in the ARP table first when transmitting a packet. If the information is not there, then
the host sends an ARP Request.
There are two types of entries in the ARP table:
•
Static ARP table entries
•
Dynamic ARP table entries
