Hard Drive Replacement Procedure

To replace a hard drive, please follow these steps:
5-24
Install the replacement module by aligning it with the
module bay and gently pushing it in. Push the cooling
module until it reaches the end of the module bay. Use
slightly more force when feeling the contact resistance
to engage the back-end connectors. The retention
latches should then hold the module in place.
Hot-swappable drive trays: The drive trays are all hot-
swappable. A disk drive failure can be corrected online.
Forearm Handles: If the failed hard drive is behind either the
left- or right-side forearm handle, unfold the handles to access
the drive trays.
Front flap: Once the front flap of the drive tray has been
opened, the drive tray must be removed from the subsystem.
Failure to remove the drive tray from the subsystem after the
front flap has been opened may cause data errors.
Slowly remove the drive: There are situations when healthy
drives have to be removed, such as "Copy & Replace"
member drives with drives of larger capacity. To avoid
damaging the drives,
pull the drive tray out only about one
inch and then wait for at least 30 seconds before you
remove it from the subsystem.
motor spin down before you take the drive out completely. Any
impact to the hard drive while the drive motor is spinning can
damage the hard drive.
Keep a replacement on hand: If a hard drive has failed,
make sure you have a replacement hard drive readily available
before removing the failed drive from the subsystem. Do not
leave the drive bay open for an extended period of time or the
