Self-help, vehicle care
z Nev er expose the battery to naked
flam es or sparks.
z A discharged ba ttery ca n freeze at
°
temperatures of 0
C . Defrost the ba ttery
in a warm room before connecting the
jump leads.
z Do not a llow battery fluid to contact
eyes, skin, fabrics or painted surfaces.
The fluid conta ins sulp huric ac id which
can cause injuries and dama ge in the
event of direct contact.
z Wear ey e protection and protective
clothing when ha ndling a battery .
z Use aux iliary battery with same voltage
(12 v olts). Its cap acity (Ah) must not b e
consid erably less than that of the
discharged battery. Voltag e and
capa city inform ation c an be found on
the batteries.
z Use jump leads with insulated terminals
and a w id th of at least 16 mm
for diesel engines).
z Do not disconnect the d ischarged
battery from the vehicle.
z Sw itch off all unnecessary electrical
consumers. Infotainment system ma y be
dam aged if switched on while jump
starting.
z Do not lean over the battery during jump
starting procedure.
z Do not allow the terminals of one lead to
touch those of the other lead.
z The vehic les should not touch w hile jump
starting .
z Apply hand brake.
z Manual transmission in neutral,
automatic transmission 3 in P.

C onnect the leads in the order shown in the
illustration:
1. Connect one end of the first jump lead to
the positiv e terminal 1 of the ba ttery
providing the jump start (identified by
"+" sign on battery case or terminal).
2. Connect the other end of the first jump
lead to the positiv e terminal 2 of the
discharged ba ttery ("+" sign).
3. Connect one end of the second jump
lead to the neg ativ e terminal 3 of the
battery providing the jump start
(id entified by "-" sign on battery case or
terminal).
4. Connect the other end of the second
jum p lead 4 to ground on the vehic le w ith
the discharged battery , e. g. on the
engine bloc k.
