DRIVE CHAIN

Read page 61 (MAINTENANCE)
carefully.
The vehicle is fitted with an endless chain
that has no master link.
CAUTION
Exceeding slack in the chain may cause
the chain to rattle or knock, resulting in
a worn chain slider and guide.
Check slack at regular intervals and
adjust as required, see page 79 (CHAIN
SLACK INSPECTION).
Have the chain replaced at an
Official dealer only, for guaranteed
accurate, prompt service.
Improper maintenance may lead to early
wear of the chain and/or front/rear
sprocket damage.
NOTE
Halve maintenance intervals if
the vehicle is used in rainy or dusty
conditions, on rough roads or for racing.
CHAIN SLACK INSPECTION
To check chain slack:
Stop the engine.
Place the vehicle on the stand, see page
60 (PLACING THE VEHICLE ON THE
STAND).
Put the gearbox in neutral.
Check chain slack by measuring the
vertical movement of the chain lower
section, midway between the sprockets.
Movement should be approximately
25 mm.
Move the motorcycle forward to check
slack at various sections of the chain.
Slack should be the same throughout
one full turn of the wheel.
If slack is greater at particular positions
of the chain, it means that some links
are warped or have seized. In this case,
contact an
aprilia
prevent seizure, lubricate the chain
frequently, see page 80 (CLEANING
AND LUBRICATION).

Chain slack must be adjusted whenever it
d i f f e r s f r o m t h e s p e c i f i e d 2 5 m m ,
regardless of whether it is greater or less
than the 25 mm service limit, even when it
is consistent at all positions of the chain.

CHAIN SLACK ADJUSTMENT
NOTE
To adjust chain slack, you will
need the rear wheel stand
to have it ready at hand.
If the chain needs adjusting after the
inspection, proceed as follows:
Place the vehicle on the rear wheel
stand, see page 70 (PLACING THE
V E H I C L E O N T H E R E A R W H E E L
STAND
).
Loosen the nut (1) completely.
NOTE
Wheel centring is aided by fixed
reference marks (2-3) located inside the
seats of the chain sliders/tensioners fitted
to the swinging arm before the wheel
spindle.
Loosen the two lock nuts (4).
Work the adjusters (5) and adjust chain
slack, making sure to use the same
reference mark settings (2-3) on both
sides of the vehicle.
