Appendix IV
Typical Uses of Your Scale
Taring Out Box Weight Before Weighing Fasteners
To fill an empty box with fasteners and find the weight of the fasteners in the box, not including the
weight of the box, using the tare function of your scale. Place the empty box on the scale, press the
tare key to tare out the box weight, and then load the fasteners into the box. The resulting weight on
the scale will be the net weight, or the weight of the fasteners without the box.
Finding the Number of Washers in a Full Box
To find the number of washers in a full box, knowing the tare weight of the box and the average weight
of one of the washers, first press the zero key to zero the scale. Place the full box on the pan, enter the
weight of the box when empty and then press the tare key to tare out the weight of the box. This will
leave you with the weight of the contents of the box. Next enter the average weight of one of the
washers and press the apw key. The display would show the number of washers in the box.
Measuring the Length of Wire on a Spool
To measure the length of wire coiled on a spool use the tare function. First enter the tare weight of the
empty spool. Next, using your user-definable "x" units (see Appendix I), calculate the ratio of the
weight of one unit length of wire to a known unit; for example, pounds.
Ratio = 1 foot of wire / .1 pounds of wire = 10.
Press the unit key until the display weighed in pounds. Enter the ratio, and press the unit key. The
display will then read in feet of wire and indicate "x" in the display.
Counting Resistors Placed in a Bag
To store the weight of an empty bag and count the number of resistors being placed in it, use the tare
function. To tare out the weight of the empty bag press the tare key. Place a known number of resis-
tors on the pan and enter the number of resistors on the pan, then press the count key. The bag
should then be filled until the scale display shows the number of resistors desired. If the scale has
been formatted to transmit the tare and count to a printer, you would press print to make a permanent
record of the transaction.
