OPERATION
Recording
Innormal o peration, theaudioor videosource
selected f or listening through theAVR635 issentto
therecordoutputs. Thismeans thatanyprogram you
arewatching or listening to maybe recorded simply
byplatingmachines c onnected t o theoutputs for
TapeOutputs _
or Videol/Video 2 Audioand

inthe record mode.
When a digitalaudiorecorder isconnected to the
DigitalAudio Outputs_1"_1,
youareableto
record the digital s ignal u singa CD R,MiniDisc o r
otherdigitalrecording system.
NOTES:
• Thedigital o utputs areactive onlywhena digital s ig
nalispresent, a ndtheydo notconvert a n analog
inputto a digitalsignal, o r change the format o f the
digital s ignal. I naddition, t hedigitalrecorder m ust
becompatible w iththe outputsignal. F orexample,
the PCMdigital i nputfroma CDplayer maybe
recorded ona CD Ror MiniDisc, but DolbyDigital
or DTSsignals maynot.

Front-Panel Connections
inaddillonto the rear-panel digital a ndanalog outputs,
theAVR635 offersHarman Ka_don's exclusive c onfig
urable front-panel output-jack f eature,. Foreasycon
nection of portable devices, youmayswitch the front
panel V ideo4 Jacks [] or theCoaxialDigital3
Jack [] froman inputto an outputbyfollowing
thesesteps:
1. Press the OSDButton _
to viewthe
MASTER MENU (Figure 1).
2. Press the Set Button _
to enterthe
IN/OUT
SETUP menu(Figure 2).

Oncethe settingismade,theInput/OutputStatus
Indicator[] will turnred,indicating t hatthejacksare
nowanoutput,instead of inthedefaultsetting asan
input.Oncechanged to anoutput, t he setting will
remain as longastheAVR 635 is turned on, unless
the setting is changed inthe OSDmenusystem, a s
described a bove. H owever, oncethe AVR 635 is
turned off,the settingiscancelled. Whenthe unitis
turned on again, t he frontpanel j ackswillreturn to
theirnormal d efault s etting asan input.Ifyouwish
to usethejacksasan output a t a futuretime,the
seltingmustbechanged againusingtheOSDmenu
system, a sdescribed a bove.
Output Level Trim Adjustment
Normal o utputlevel a djustment fortheAVR635 is
established usingEzSeVEQ, asoutlined on pages
2_26. Insomecases, h owever, it maybe desirable
to adjusttheoutputlevelsusingprogram material such
asa testdisc, o r a selection youarefamiliar w ith.
Mditionally, t heoutputlevel f orthe subwoofer can
onlybeadjusted using thisprocedure.
Toadjustthe outputlevelsusing pre.gram material, first
setthereference v olume forthefrontleftandfrontright
channels using the VolumeControlE_Jql]_q[_
Oncethe re.ference levelhasbeenset,pressthe
ChannelSelect Button _

_"_lj. Tochange the level, f irstpressthe Set Button

Repeat t he procedure a s needed until a ll channels
requiring adjustment havebeenset.When all adjust
mentshavebeenmadeandnofurtheradjustments
aremadefor5 seconds, the AVR635 willreturnto
normal o peration.
Theoutputlevelsmayalsobeadjusted using the on-
screen menusystemto either t he internal testtoneor
anexternal t estdiscbyfollowing theinstructions
shownon page30.
Dim Function
SincetheAVR635will oftenbe usedwhenmovies
or othervideoprmgramming is viewed underlow light
conditions, youmaywishto lower t he brightness o f
the front-panel displays andindicators s othattheydo
notdistract f rom thevideopresentation. Youmaydim
the displays usingthemenusystem, a sshownon
page39, or youmaycontrol t he brightness d irectly
fre.m the remote,

onceto dimthe
fre.nt p anel t o halfthe normal b rightness level;press
it againto turnthe displays o ft Notethatwhenthe
displays aredimmedor turned off,the bluelighting
around the Standby/OnSwitch [] willcontinue to

Theaccent l ighting forthe VolumeControl[]
will
remain at itsnormal l evel, r atherthandimwhenthe
panel d isplays a reat halfbrightness.
Notethatall changes t o thef_ontpanel b rightness
level a retemporary: thedisplays will return to furl
brightness afterthe AVRisturnedoffandthenon
again. T oreturnthedisplays to fullbrightness without
turningthe unitoff,presstheDire,Button _
as
needed untilthe displays a reon.
Inaddition to lowering the brightness o f thedisplays
or turning themoffcompletely, youmaywishto have
themappear w henever a butLon on the remote or
frontpanelispushed, a ndthengradually f adeoutafter

MemoryBackup
Thisproduct i s equipped witha memory backup sys
