Surround Mode Selection
Oneof the mostimportant features of theAVR635

programs.
Seleclqon of a surround modeisbased on personal
taste, a swellasthe typeof program source matarial
beingused. F orexample, motion pictures or TVpro
grams beaung thelogoof oneofthe malor s urround-
encoding processes, such asDolbySurround o r DTS
Stereo maybeplayed ineither t he DelbyDigital,
Delby ProLogicIICinema, DTSNeo:6Cinema, or
Logic7 Cinema s urround modes, d epending o nthe
source mataual.
NOTE: O ncea program hasbeen encoded withmatrix
surround information, it retains thesurround information
as longastheprogram is broadcast instareo. Thus,

Even when a program is notlisted ascarrying intentional
surround information, youmayfindthatthe PmLogicII,

Surround m odesmaybe changed atanytime by

Digital Audio Playback
Digital audioisa major a dvancement overolderanalog

improved d ynamic r ange andsignificant improvements to
signal-to noise ratios. I naddition, digital systems h avethe
capability to deliver anadditional channel thatisspecili-
cally devoted tolowfrequency i nformation. Thisisthe
".1"channel referred t o whenyouseethesesystems
described a s"5.1/'"6.1"or "7.1."Thebass channel is
separate f romtheotherchannels, butsince it is inten-
tionally bandwidthdimitad,
sound designers h avegiven it
thatunique designation. Whena Digital s oundtrack i s
playing, the number o f channels a vailable willvary
accolding to thewayin whichthe program was
recolded. A lthough mostmovies recorded withdigital
soundhave5.1 soundtracks, somehave6.1 or 7.1
sound,whileothersretain the original 2.0 or even
monaural sound. W henthe program sourceisa
broadcast, cableor satellite delivered digital p rogram,
onlyonetypeof soundl_ack maybe delivered at a
time,whileoptical s ources suchas DVD mayprovide
morethanoneaudiooption,Ineithercase, t he deci
sionof whattypeof sound trackandhewmanychan
nels to offeris up to the program's p reduceL W iththe
AVR635 youareableto not onlyplaybackthe erigi
nalcompatible d igital f ormat,but using the processing
power of theTexas Instruments DSPprocessor it is
possible to decode the basicdigital t _ack for 2.0 or
5.1 sound andthenselect a n additional "post-pro
cessing" modeto deliver a dditional channels.
DolbyDigital
Dolby Digital isa standald partof DVD, andisavailable
on specially e ncoded L Ddiscs andsatellite b road
casts andit is apartd thehighdefinifion t elevision
(HD_ system.
An opSonal, external R Fdemodulator is required to
usetheAVR635 to listen to the DoibyDigital s ound-
tracksavailable on laserdiscs. C onnect t he REoutput
of the LDplayer to thedemodulator andthenconnect
the digital o utputof the demodulator to theOpticalor
CoaxialInputs I'_1"_11_ _t of theAVR635. No
demodulator is required forusewithDVDplayers or
DTSencoded laserdiscs.
Inorderto provide maximum playback c ompatibility
withDVDs, the AVR635 receiver w ill always default
firstto the playback m odeembedded ina disc'sdigital
"flag"information. ForDolbyDigital d iscs, t he following
playback m odes areinillally selected affertheAVR
locksto the incoming digital a udiodatastream to
identify t he selected:
• Whena 5.1 audiostream is detected, t he Dolby
Digital 5 .1 format w ill beselected, r egardless o f the
number o f speakers i nyoursystem, i n compliance
withDolbyLaboratories licensing requirements.
• Whena discwiththe DolbyDigital E X formatflagis
played, y oursystem willautomatically switchto the
EXmodewhenseven mainchannel speakers a re
available,
