OPERATION
Basic Operation
Onceyouhavecompleted t he initial setupandconfigu
ration of theAVR635, it is simple to operate and
enjoy. Thefolbdng instructions willhelpyoumaximize
theenjoyment of yournewreceiver:
Turningthe AVR635 Onor Off
• When using theAVR635tot thefirsttime,youmust
press theMain PowerSwitch[] toturntheuniton.
Thisplaces theunitina Standby m ode, asindicated b y
tileamber i lluminafion surrounding theStandby/On
Switchi11. Once the unitis inStandby, youmaybegin
a listening session bypressing t heStandby/OnSwitch
[] onthefrontpanel, o r the PowerOnButton _
or
AVRSelectorql_)
onthe remote. This willturn
tileunitonandrefurn theAVR to theinputsource that
waslastused. T heunitmay alsobe turned onfrom
Standby b ypressing a nyof tileInput Selector

Whenever theAVRisturned on,youwill s eeallofthe
tiont-panel indicators lightupfora fewseconds. Thisis
normal, andit ispartof theunit's powepon selftest
procedure.

Toturnthe unitoff at theendof a listening session,
simply pressthe Standby/OnSwitch [] on thefront
panel o r the PowerOff Button _[IPd_'_onthe
remote. P ower w ill beshutoff to anyequipment
plugged intothe rear-panel SwitchedACAccessory
Outlet@ andthe illumination a round theStandby/
OnSwitch [] will turnamber.
When the remote is usedto turnthe unit"off," it is
actually placing the system ina Standby m ode,asindi-
catedbythe amber lighfing around the Standby/On
Switch [].
• Toprogram theAVR635 forautomatic t urn-off,
press the SleepButton _
onthe remote,. Each
pressofthe button willdecrease t hetimebefore
shutdowninthe following s equence:

Onceyouhavesetthe desired SleepT_me, thefront
panel d isplay willautomatically dim to halfbrightness
andreturn, T ocheckonthe timeremaining untilthe
unitshutsoff,presstheSleepButton @ once.
Tocancel t heSleepfunction, p ressandholdthe
SleepButton_) untilthe information d isplay leturns
to normal b rightness; andthe woldsSL EE P
0 F F will appear i nthe Lower DisplayLine _'_1.
Whenyouwillbe away from homeforanextended
periodof time,it is always a goodideato completely
turnthe unitoff withthefront panelMainPower
Switch [].
NOTE: A ll presetmemories a relostif the unitis left
turned off by using tile MainPowerSwitch [] for
morethanfourweeks.
Source Selection
• Toselecta source, p ressanyofthe Input Selector
Buttons _)_
on the remote.
• Theinputsoume mayalsobe changed by pressing
thefront-panel Input SourceSelectorButton [].
Eachpressof the buttonwillmovethe inputselec
tionthrough the listof available i nputs.
• When a newinputisselectedtheAVRwillautomat
ically switchto the digitalinput(ifselected), surround
mode,component videoinput, A /VSyncDelay and
NightModeconfigurations thatwereineffect t he
lasttimethatinputwasused.Ifthe L E VE L

put levels willalsochange to the preset v alues.
• The%nt-panel V ideo4 InputsI'_1,OpticalDigital
3 Input[] or theCoaxialDigital3 Input [] may
beusedtoconnect a device suchasa videogame
or camco_der to yourhomeentertainment system on
atemporary b asis.
• Asthe inputsource is changed, t henewinputname
willappear m omentarily asan on-screen display in
the lowerthirdof thevideodisplay. Theinputname
willalsoappear i nthe UpperDisplayLine []
and
inthe frontpanelInput Indicators_i"l.
• When an audioonlysource isselected, thelastvideo
inputusedremains r outad tothe Videol/Video 2
VideoOutputs_i_) andVideoMonitorOutputs
i_). Thispermits simultaneous viewing andlistening
to different s ources.
• When a composite orSddeo source isselected, the
video sgnal b r thatinput w illberouted t o theVideo
MonitorOutputi_) andwill b evbwabbona TV
monitor connected to theAVR 635.
6-Channel/8-Channel D irect Input
There aretwoinputchoices available f or usewith
sources suchasa DVDAudioor SACD player thatare
connected t o the 8-ChannelDirect Inputs _.
Selecttheappropriate i nputaccording t o the wayyour
system andsource equipment is configured:
• The6 C H DI R EC T inputshouldbe used
whenthe SBRandSBLinputsareNOTinuseand
the inputsourcedevice hasits owninternal bass
management system. Thisinputpasses t he input
fromthe source directly through to the volume con
trolwithoutanyanalog to digital c onversion a ndit
mutestheunused inputjacksto prevent u nwanted
noisefromintetlering withsystem performance.
• The8 C H DI R EC T inputshouldbe used
whenan inputisconnected to all eight8-Channel
Direct Inputs @ andwhentheinputsource
devicehasitsowninternal b assmanagement sys
tern.Thisinputpasses t he inputfromthe source
directly through to the volume contolwithoutany
analog to digitalconversion a ndit mutes the
unused inputjacksto prevent u nwanted n oise
frominterfering withsystem pe_1ormance.
Volume and Tone Control
• Adjust t he volume to a comfortable l evelusingthe
front-panel VolumeControl[]
or remote Volume

• Totemporarily s ilence allspeaker o utputs, p ressthe
Mute Button _

Thiswill interrupt the out
put to allspeakers andthe headphone j ack,but it
will notaffectanyrecolding or dubbing thatmaybe
in progress. Whenthe system is muted, t he word
MU T E will flashinthe on screen display and
Upper DisplayLine [], pressthe Mute Buttons

againto return to normal o peration.
• Theunit'stonecontrols maybe takenout of the
signal p athbypressing the ToneMode Button on
the frontpanel [ ] or the remote_.
Thefirst
pressof eitherbutton will show a message inthe
on screen display andLower DisplayLine []
withthe current s tatus of the tonecontrols. Thesys
tamdefault i s T 0 NE I N, whichindicates t hat
the bassandtrebbcontrols areactive.Press the

on theremoteor
the _/p, Button [] onthe frontpanel t o change
the setting to T 0 N E 0 U T, whichis "flat"
response without t hetonecontrols beingactive.
When the tonecontrob areactive, the amount o f
bassandtmbb booWcut m aybe adjusted byfirst
pressing the ToneMode Button on thefrontpanel
[]
or theremote_

desired setting(BASS MODE or TREBLE
