INSTALLATION
AND CONNECTIONS
System Installation
After u npacking t heunit,Ioca_ng i t ina place withade

nections t o youraudioandvideoequipment.
IMPORTANT NOTE: F oryourpersonal safety a ndto
avoid possible d amage b yourequipment andspeakers,
it isalways g oodpractice t oturnoff andunplug theAVR
andALLsource equipment floratheACoutput b efore
making anyaudioorvideosystem connections.
Audio EquipmentConnections
Werecommend t hatyou usehighquality interconnect
cables whenmaking connections t o sourceequipment
andrecorders t o preserve t he integrity o f the signals.
1. Connect t he analog outputof a CDplayer to the
CDAudioInputs _).
NOTE: I fyourCDplayer hasbothfixedandvariable
audiooutputs, i t isbestto usethefixedoutputunless
youfindthatthe inputto the receiver i sso lowthatthe
sound is noisy, o r so highthatit is distorted.
2. Connect t he analog Play/Out jacksof a casselte
deck,MD,CDR or otheraudiorecorder t o the
TapeInputs _). Connect t heanalogRecord/In
jacksonthe recolder t o the TapeOutputs
on theAVR635.
3. Connect t he outputof anydigitalsources suchas
a CDor DVDchanger o r player, a dvanced v ideo
game,a digitalsatellite receive_, HDll/tuner or
digitalcableset-topbox or the outputof a corn
patiblecomputer s oundcardto the Optical and
CoaxialDigitalAudio Inputs _) _ [['_l'_l
4. Connect thecoaxial or optical D igital A udioOutputs
_'."@P ontherearpanel o ftheAVR635tothe match
ingdigital inputconnections ona CDRor MiniDisc
recorde_.
5.Assemble t heAM loopantenna s upplied w iththe unit
sothatthetabsat thebosom of theantenna l oop
snapintotheholes inthe base. Connect i tto theAM
and6NDScrewTerminalsO.
6. Connect t he supplied FMantenna t o the FM (75-
Ohm)Connection_. TheFMantenna maybe
an external roofantenna, an inside powered or
wireleadantenna or a connection f roma cable
TVsystem, I ftheantenna or connection u ses
300 ohmlwindeadcable, y ou mustusean opllonal
300 ohm-b-75 ohmadaptor t o makethe
connection.
7. Connect the %nt, center, surround andsurround
backspeaker o utputsCO0@
to the respec
tivespeakers.
Toensurethatallthe audiosignals arecarriedb your
speakers w ithoutlossof clarityor resolution, wesug-
gestthatyouusehighquality speaker c able.Many
brands of cableamavailable andthe choiceof cable
maybe influenced b y thedistance belween your
speakers a ndthe receive_, thetypeof speakers y ou
use,personal preferences andothertactors. Your
dealer o r installer i sa valuable r esource to consult i n
selecting the propercable.
Regardless of thebrandof cableselected, werecom-
mendthatyouusecable witha gauge of 14 or smaller
Remember thatinspecifying cable, t helowerthe
number; thethickerthecable.
Cable witha gauge of 16 maybe usedforshortruns
of lessthan10 taet. W e do notrecommend t hatyou
usecables withanAWGequivalent of 18 or higher,
dueto the power lossanddegradation i npertormance
thatwilloccur:
Cables thatareruninside wallsshould havethe appro
priatamarkings t o indicate listing withUL,CSAor other
appropriate testingagency standards. QuesSons about
running cables inside walls shouldbe referred to your
installer or a licensed electrician w hois familiar with
the NEC and/ortheapplicable b uilding codesin
yourarea.
Whenconnecllng w ires b thespeakers, be certain
to observe proper p olarity. Notethatthe positive (+)
terminal of eachspeaker c onnecSon hasa specific color
code, a s noted on page8. However, mostspeakers
stillusea mdterminal f orthepositive (+) connection.
Connect the "negative" or "black" w ireto thesame
terminal on boththe receiver a ndthe speaker.
NOTE: W hilemostspeaker m anutacturers adhere to
an industry convention o f usingblack terminals f or
negative andredonesforpositive, somemayvary
fromthisconfiguration. Toensureproperphase and
optimal p erformance, consultthe idenllfication plateon
yourspeaker o r the speaker's manual to verifypolarity,
If youdo not know the polariS/of y ourspeaker, ask
yourdealerforadvice beforeproceeding, or consult
the speaker's manufacturer.
Wealso recommend thatthe lengthof cableused
to connectspeakerpairsbe identical. F orexample,
usethe samelengthpieceof cableto connectthe
front leftandfront-rightor surroundleft andsur
round-right s peakers, e venif the speakers area
differentdistance from the AVR635.
8. Connections to a subwoofer arenormally m adevia
a linelevel a udioconnection f romthe Subwoofer
Output Q to thelinelevelinputof a subwooter
witha buibinamplifier. When a passive subwoofer
is used, t he connection f irstgoesto a powerampli
tier,whichwill be connected t o oneor moresub
woofer s peakers. Ifyouareusinga powered sub
woofer t hatdoesnothavelinelevel i nputconnec
tions, f ollowthe instructions furnished w iththe
speaker f orconnection i nformation.
9. Ifan external m ultichannel audiosourcewith
5.1 outputs suchasan external d igital p rocesaoW
decoder, DVDAudioor SACD player is used, c on
necttheoutputsofthatdevice to the 8-Channel
Direct Inputs _).
VideoEquipmentConnections
Videoequipment isconnected i nthesamemanner
asaudiocomponents. Again, t he useof highqualify
interconnect cables isrecommended to preserve
signal q uality.
1. Connect a VCR's or othervideosource's a udioand
videoPlay/Out jacksto theVideol/Video 2 Audio
andVideoInput Jacks @iD@ @ on the rear
panel. T heAudioandVideoRecord/In j ackson the
VCR shouldbe connected t o the Videol/Video 2

audioinputassignment foranysourceusing the

thefrontpanel o r remote(seepage33).
NOTE: W henconnecting a devicesuchasa digital
cableboxor otherset-taptunerproduct w itha digital
audiooutput, w e recommend t hatyouconnect b oth
the digital a ndanalogoutputs of the product t o your
AVR. T heaudioinputpolling feature of theAVRwill
thenbeableto makecertain thatyouhavea constant
audiofeed,sinceit willautomatically switchtheaudio
inputtothe analog jacksif thedigital f eedisintenuptad
or notavailable fora particular channel.
