OPERATION
• When a discwithDolbyDigital d ata,but only
2.0 audioisdetected, t he detault m odeis Dolby
Digital w ithProLogicII post-processing whenyou
havea 5.1 speaker s ystem, o r DolbyDigital w ith
ProLogicIIxpost-processing whenyouhave
a 7.1 speaker s ystem.
• Depending o n the number o f speaker c hannels
available i n yoursystem, o ncetheAVRlocksto
thedigitalsignal, y oumayselect a nysurround
modeor post-processing option thatisavailable,
based on the incoming datastream's possible
restricfions a ndthe number o f speakers i nyour
system. F orexample, whena 5,1 or 2.0 audio
sl_eam is in use,youmayselect a lternate, post
processing s uchasLogic7/7 Channel Movie
Modepost-processing to createthe rearsurrounds
in7.1 speaker s ystems.
DTS
DTSis another d igitalaudiosystem thatis capable of
delivering 5 ,1 or 6,1 discrete or matrix sound field
reproduction. Although bothDTSandDolbyDigital a re
digital, t heyusedifferent m ethods of encoding thesig
nals, a ndtt_us theyrequire different d ecoding circuits
to convert t he digital s ignals backto analog.
DTSencoded soundtracks areavailable on selectDVD
andLDdiscs, a swellason special a udioonlyDTS
discs. Y oumayuseanyLDor CDplayer equipped
witha digital o utputto playDTSencoded discswith
the AVR635,All thatis required isto connect t he
player's output t o either a n Opticalor CoaxialInput
on therearpanelq_)@ or frontpanel1"_41"_l
Inorderto listen to DVDs encoded withDTSsound-
tracks, t he DVD playermustbe compatible w iththe
DTSsignal, w hichis indicated b ya DTSlogoonthe
player's f rontpanel.Early DVDplayers maynotbe
ableto playDTS-encoded DVDs. Thisdoesnot indi
catea problem withtheAVR635, assomeplayers
cannot p assthe DTSsignal t hrough to the digital o ut
puts.Ifyou areindoubtasto the capability o f your
DVDplayer t o handle DTSdiscs, c onsultthe player's
owner's manual.
NOTE: S omeDVDplayers havea default s etting that
doesnot pass through the DTSsignal.Before playing
DVDs witha DTSsoundtrack, makecertain thatthe
selllngs inyourDVD player h avebeenproperly a djusted
sothatDTS audiois passed through. C onsult the
owner's manual f oryourDVD player formoreinforma
tion on making thesesettings.
Selectinga DigitalSource
Toutilize eitherdigitalmode, y ou musthaveproperly
connected a digitalsource to theAVR635, Connect
the digitaloutputs fromDVDplayers, H DT_/receivers,
satellite systems o r CDplayers to the Opticalor
CoaxialInputsI'_11_@ @, Ino_der t o provide a
backup signal anda source foranalog stereo recording,
theanalog outputs provided o n digital s ource equipment
should alsobe connected t o theirappropdata i nputs on
theAVR 635 rearpanel ( e.g., c onnect t heanalog stereo
audiooutput f roma DVD to the DVD AudioInputs@
on the rearpanelwhenyouconnect t hesource's
digital o utputs).
If youhavenot already c onfigured an inputfora digital
sourceusing the on-screen menus asshown on page
21, firstselect t he inputusing the remote or 1]ont
panel c ontrols, asoutlined inthismanual. N ext,
select t he digital s ourcebypressing the Digital
SelectButton (]_r_
andthenusingthe A/V

onthe remote or the</1_
Button [] on the frontpanel t o choose anyof the

AVR635 willautomatically detect w hichtypeof digital

Whenbotha digital a ndananalog connection a re
madebetween a source device andtheAVR, t hedigi
talinputis thedefault. I f thedigitalstream is not pres
ent or is interrupted, theunitwillautomaticaMy
switch
overto the analog inputsforthe selected source,

do so byfollowing the instructions showninthe

Whena digital s ource is playing, t heAVR635 senses
thetype of bitstream datathatispresent. U sing this
information, the correct s urround modewillautomati
callybe selected. F orexample, DTSbitstreams will
causetheunitto switchto DTSdecoding, andDolby
Digital b itstreams willenable DolbyDigital d ecoding.
Whentheunitsenses PCMdatafromCDsor LDs,you
mayselect a nyof the standard Dolbyor DTSsurround
modesor Logic7. Sincethe rangeof available s ur
roundmodes is dependent on thetype ofdigitaldata
thatis present, t heAVR635 shows youwhattypeof
signal i s present t o helpyouunderstand t hechoiceof
modes.
Whena digital s ource is firstdetected, t heAVR635
willdisplay a message to indicate thetypeof bitstleam
beingreceived. Thismessage willappear s hortlyafter
an inputor surround modeis changed, andwinremain
inthe Lower DisplayLine []
foraboutfiveseconds
before thatportion of the display returns to the normal
surround modeindication.
ForDolbyDigital a ndDTSsources, a numerical indica
tion (such as 3/2/2.1) willappear, showing the num
bet of channels present i nthe data.
Thefirstnumber i nthe display message indicates how
manydiscrete front channel signals arepresent
• A "3" tellsyouthatseparate frontleft,centerand
frontrightsignals areavailable, Thiswill bedisplayed
for DolbyDigital 5 ,1 andDTS5,1 programs.
• A "2" tellsyouthatseparate frontleftandrightsig-
nals am available, but thereis no discrete center
channel signal, T hiswill be displayed f orDolby
Digital b itstreams thathavestereoprogram material,
• A "1" tellsyouthatthereis onlya monochannel
available inthe DolbyDigital b itstream,
Themiddle number i nthedisplay message i ndicates
howmany discrete surround c hannel signals arepresent.
• A "3" tellsyouthatseparate, discrete leftsurround,
centersurround andrightsurround signals arepres
ent.Thisisavailable onlyon discswithDTSES
digitalaudio.
• A "2" tellsyouthatseparate surround lettandright
signals am available. ThiswMI b edisplayed t or Dolby
Digital 5 ,1 andDTS5,1 programs.
• A "1" tellsyouthatthereis onlya single, surround-
encoded surround channel. Thiswillappear f or
DolbyDigital b itstreams thathavematrix encoding.
• A "0" indicates t hatthereis no surround channel
information. Thiswill be displayed f ortwochannel
stereoprograms.
Thelastnumber i ndicates w hether t hereisa discrete
lowf_equency effects(LFE) c hannel. Thisisthe ".1" in
the common abbreviation of "5.1" sound andit is a
special c hannel thatcontains o nlybassfTequencies,
• A ".1"tellsyouthatan LFE channel i s present T his
will bedisplayed f or DolbyDigital 5 .1 andDTS5.1
programs, asavailable.
• A "0" indicates t hatthereis no LFE channel i nfor
mafion available. HoweveT, evenwhenthereis no
dedicated LFE channel, l owfrequency sound will be
present at the subwooter outputwhenthe speaker
configuration i s setto show the presence of a
subwoofer.
• Theinformation i nthe rightsideof the display will
tellyouif the digital a udiodatacontains a special
flagsignal t hatwill automatically activate theappro
priate 6.1 or 7.1 mode. T hiswill beshownas
EXONor EXOFF for DolbyDigital b itslleams a nd
ESONor ESOFF for DTSbitstreams.
Whena 2.0 or 5.1 digital s ourceis playing on a sys
tamconfigured for5.1operafion, you mayuseDolby
Digital E X,DTSES,Logic7/7 or DolbyProLogicIIx
to addrearchannels f orfull7,1 soundfields. N ote,
however; thattheavailability of specific modes for
postprocessing i s dependant on theformatof the
