Configuring the Console Port

To configure the Console port, do the following:
1.
Choose Configuration|Serial Configuration.
2.
As shown in Figure 2.5, you can configure four options: the Hardware Flow Control, the Software
Flow Control, the Autobaud Upon Break feature, and the Console Baud Rate. Under normal
circumstances, you will never change these defaults. However, the option you probably won't be
familiar with—and which Cisco recommends not changing—is the Autobaud Upon Break feature. By
enabling this feature, you force the switch to automat−ically sense the baud rate of the switch by
pressing the Break key on the PC or dumb terminal. You can set the baud rate on the switch from
2,400 to 57,600 baud.

Configuring Telnet

To configure Telnet, do the following:
1.
Using a Telnet emulator supporting VT100 or VT200, use Telnet to access your switch configuration.
2.
Choose Configuration|Console Configuration. The Telnet Configuration screen appears. This screen
allows you to configure three options:
The number of Telnet sessions allowed simultaneously, from 0 to 5
The switch to disallow new Telnet sessions
The ability to terminate all Telnet sessions
Tip Disallowing new Telnet sessions is a great feature to invoke when you are configuring or upgrading the
switch. That way, another administrator can't come in and try to change the configuration while you are
working on the switch.

Configuring the Password

The Password menu is available from the Configuration menu. It has just two options, and only one password
needs to be configured for the whole switch. You can set or delete the password.
When changing the password, you will need to supply the current password. If no password is configured, just
press Enter. You will then be asked for the new password. The new password can be up to 15 characters long.

Configuring an IP Address and Default Gateway

Configuring the default gateway and the IP address on the menu−driven IOS is pretty straightforward, as well.
As you can see from Figure 2.6, the MAC address comes preconfigured; you need only enter the IP address,
subnet mask, and default gateway of your router or route processor for individual VLANs you have
configured.
