Towing, general

Important safety information
Note
The permissible vehicle height may be exceeded if it
is necessary to transport the vehicle on a low loader
(for example, following an accident). Drive with
particular care and attention. Observe the maximum
headroom of bridges and underpasses.
Otherwise you could cause an accident.
Note
If you have your vehicle towed without the engine
running, the power steering, the compressed air
supply and the oil pump in the transmission are
inoperative.
It then takes a great deal of effort to steer the
vehicle. You could leave the road when cornering or
collide with the towing vehicle.
When the brake system has no compressed air
supply, you can no longer brake the vehicle with the
service brake and this could cause you to collide
with the towing vehicle. Fill the compressed air
system from an external compressed air source.
If the oil pump in the transmission is inoperative,
transmission damage will occur when the vehicle is
towed.
Before starting to tow, talk to the driver of the towing
vehicle and agree on clear communication signals.
Make sure that you and the driver of the towing
vehicle adjust your driving style accordingly.
Note
If you are towing a vehicle with ASR (acceleration
skid control), ESP® (Electronic Stability Program) or
ABA (Active Brake Assist), the ASR/ESP®/ABA
system may perform uncontrolled braking actions.
Switch the ASR/ESP®/ABA off and disconnect the
battery before towing the vehicle.

Note
Trailer/semitrailer with ABS:
When towing entire tractor/trailer combinations with
braked trailer and electronic trailer brake, there is a
danger of uncontrolled braking of the trailer/
semitrailer.
This can cause the trailer/semitrailer to lose lateral
stability and break away.
Therefore connect the towing vehicle and the trailer/
semitrailer with an ABS cable (5-pin or 7-pin).
i
When towing air-sprung vehicles, check the driving
level and correct it if necessary. If the compressed-
air system cannot be filled, then release the
combination brake cylinders mechanically, see
chapter "Releasing combination brake cylinders
mechanically". The steering wheel must be secured
if the vehicle is raised at the rear for towing and
towed backward, see chapter "Towing raised".
Maximum permissible speed: See towing load table
for towing/recovery vehicle.
i
When the engine is not running, the oil pump in the
transmission is inoperative. If you tow the vehicle on
one or more drive axles with the propeller shaft
installed, the transmission could be damaged.
If the hydraulic auxiliary drive is leaking:
Remove propeller shaft.
Tow the vehicle with the front axle raised.
