General notes
Note
The drive shaft of the live power take-off can turn
with the engine running. There is a risk of injury.
Perform emergency shifting of the live power take-off
only when the vehicle is stationary, the parking
brake is applied and the engine is off.

Power take-off variants A and B
You can identify vehicles with power take-off variant B (N4W or N4X) by
the external clutch actuator.

Heavy duty tractor unit:
Depending on the vehicle equipment installed, the
hydraulic pumps are driven via the transmission power
take-off using a propeller shaft for the following systems:
• Semitrailer/trailer hydraulic systems
• Rear fan
• Coolant pump
• Leading axle steering
If the propeller shaft fails, the malfunctions described
below will occur.

If the steering of the leading axle fails, the rear
wheels may steer the wrong way when reversing.
Reverse travel with the wheels steered the wrong
way can lead to damage.

Manually shift power take-off

Live power take-off (NMV) emergency shift mode

If the live power take-off fails, you can make or release a
rigid connection for power transmission in the power
take-off. When switching off manually, make sure that
the power take-off is not under load. Switch pumps to
zero delivery, for example.
• Activate the starting-off aid (special equipment) to
unload the leading axle.
Semitrailer or trailer: Failure of the raising, lowering
and self-steering functions etc.
If rear fan and coolant pump fail:
• Note coolant temperature, particularly when starting
off and braking with fluid coupling.
Failure of the rear cooling system:
• Detach all plug contacts at the control unit of the rear
cooling system. The control unit is underneath the
trim in the right stowage compartment on the rear
panel. This activates the rear fan at full power.
