black and white: Used to define images which have no color information. Strictly
speaking, it should only describe images with no shades of gray - just areas of black.
See halftone.
bus network: A form of network cabling where each computer is connected (daisy-
chained) to the computer at either side of it. The ends of the bus are terminated.
byte: A unit of computer information equal to 8 bits.
Cancel button: A button, usually found in a dialog box, which closes the dialog box
and does not carry out any changes that may have been specified. See Apply button,
Close button, and OK button.
check box: A small square section of a dialog box that when clicked puts a check
mark in the box. This shows that the feature or choice mentioned in the accompany-
ing caption has been selected. Clicking again removes the check mark. Check boxes
can usually be selected and deselected independently. See Option button.
Chooser: A Macintosh accessory that allows you to select and use networked devices
such as printers and file servers.
client/server: A form of networking used in larger installations. One or more com-
puters are dedicated as servers and handle all the network traffic from the other
computers, known as clients. Printers are usually installed anywhere on the network
and are controlled by the server(s). See also peer-to-peer.
clone: A functionally equivalent piece of hardware or software.
Close button: A button, usually found in a dialog box, which closes the dialog box so
you can see behind it. The Close button usually does not cause any changes to occur.
See Apply button, Cancel button, and OK button.
complex page: A page consisting of graphics or text and graphics. Complex pages
may require more printer RAM to print.
Control Panel: Part of the Windows or Macintosh system software. Also the panel at
the front of the printer itself.
daisy-chain: A way of connecting devices on a network. Cables pass from one device
to the next. The ends of the daisy chain are not connected, but have terminators
attached.
default: A value or setting built in to a system or program. A default can usually be
changed, but is chosen to be satisfactory to the majority of users.
