Port Alert Applications

Port alerts are designed to monitor specific events occuring at a port by means of a user-defined
ascii character string. Traps are then sent to the SYSMSG log and the Port Alert log, if enabled. The
Port Alert feature allows you to configure up to five ascii character strings for each port.
Port Alerts can be configured for a port when it is desirable to know if someone unplugs the Ethernet
cable to a Cisco device. Although the Cisco device may be configured to send SNMP traps when
any interface changes state, there is no way for the device to send traps if the Ethernet cable is
unplugged. The Port Alerts feature provides this capability.
(Example A below demonstrates this application.)
Port Alerts can also monitor a legacy device which does not support SNMP traps but can print error
conditions to its console port such as Error: data errors detected on interface,
or boot messages such as ACME Device Booting.
(Example B below demonstrates this application.)
Example A: Ethernet Connection Alerts
In this example, Port 5 is configured as a terminal server port to the console port of the Cisco device.
Port monitoring is enabled for Port 5 with the port alert string LOSTCARR defined. The following
ADT SYS MSG is generated when the Ethernet cable is unplugged:
SYS MSG: Port Alert:(port5) Cisco 1600: "01:20:27: %QUICC_ETHER-1-
LOSTCARR: Unit 0, lost carrier. Transceiver problem?"
And the following SNMP trap message is sent:
Port Alert:(port5) Cisco 1600: "01:20:27: %QUICC_ETHER-1-LOSTCARR:
Unit 0, lost carrier. Transceiver problem?" (GMT 14:56:57 6/24/2004)
Example B: Error Message Alerts
In this example, Port 8 is configured as a terminal server port and connected to the console port of
the legacy device. Port monitoring is enabled for Port 8 with the port alert strings error and
boot defined. The option ignore-case is defined for Port 8. The following SYS MSG
messages are generated:
SYS MSG: Port Alert:(port8) ACME Model 1: "Error: data errors
detected on interface"
SYS MSG: Port Alert:(port8) ACME Model 1: "ACME Device Booting ..."
The following SNMP trap messages are generated:
Port Alert:(port8) ACME Model 1: "Error: data errors detected on
interface"
(GMT 15:28:24 6/24/2004)
Port Alert:(port8) ACME Model 1: "ACME Device Booting ..."
