Installation & Connections

Shelf and Card Connections

The following paragraphs describe cables, connectors, and pinouts for each Front Panel port or shelf
connector when the SC-ADT is installed in a GDC shelf/enclosure. When making card and shelf
connections for the SC-ADT device:
Always adhere to the installation guidelines, cited in the beginning of this chapter, and the
connection guidelines listed below:
Observe all ESD precautions during installation procedures. Be sure to wear a properly
grounded antistatic wrist strap.
Make all electrical connections through the back panel and front panel connectors provided.
Figure 2-1
shows shelf/card connections for the single-slot SC-ADT 8- port or 16-port device.
Figure 2-2
shows shelf/card connections for the SC-ADT 32-port device. Note that the 32-port
device consists of an expansion card with additional rear panel ethernet ports and additional front
panel Terminal Server/Transport ports.

Modem Connections

When the SC-ADT device is equipped with internal modems, only the SC-ADT's rear panel upper
RJ45 connector (Interface "A" in
one or both modems
as described below, or employ one external modem and one of the two internal modems.
When the SC-ADT device is to use one or two external modems, each external modem must be
connected to Async Port1 or Async Port2 of the SC-ADT. A DTE adapter at the modem's rear panel
DB25 connector is required for this connection. Each external modem provides the RJ45 connector
that makes the line connection.
Note
Refer to your GDC V.F28.8/33.6 or GDC V.34 Dual modem documentation for detailed instructions on
modem configuration, jumper settings, or connectivity requirements for switched network operation of the
corresponding modem.

Power Connection

Before making connections, determine whether the SC-ADT can be powered from the same AC
circuit as the equipment connected to its terminal server ports. Having the SC-ADT and the
connecting equipment on the same AC circuit prevents large circulating currents caused by
differences in ground potential.
If you cannot determine whether both devices are on the same circuit, verify that the potential
difference between the grounding circuits of the respective power outlets is no more than 0.25V
rms. Refer to the
Note
The AC outlet that powers the SC-ADT units should not be under switch control.
