Installation & Connections
Chapter 2:

Overview

This chapter describes installation and setup procedures for the SC-ADT 8-port, 16-port or 32-port
ADT (Asynchronous Data Transport) device. Procedures for all units are similar, except where
noted. Setup includes making power connections, performing pre-operational checks, and making
system connections. If this is your first installation of the SC-ADT, be sure to read the previous
sections of this manual to understand the optimal functioning of the SC-ADT product as it applies
to your network.
This chapter also provide brief procedures for setting up SC-ADT internal modems (if so equipped).
Refer to
Chapter 3, SC-ADT Configuration
quickly setting up the SC-ADT as a Terminal Server or Transport device.
SpectraComm Shelf / Enclosure Installation Guidelines
Locate the shelf/enclosure in a ventilated area where the ambient temperature does not exceed
environmental specifications
Do not install the shelf/enclosure directly above equipment such as power supplies, which
generate large amounts of heat.
For standalone AC power applications, the SC-ADT 8-port or 16-port device is shipped in the
SC1001A enclosure. When installing the SC-ADT device in a field spare, ensure that the
enclosure is the SC1001A model. Previous AC enclosure models may not adequately power
applications that employ the SC-ADT plug-in modem(s).
When SC-ADT devices are to be installed in the SC 2000 shelf, do not wall-mount the shelf
vertically as no strain relief is available to the front panel connector assemblies in this position.
SpectraComm ADT Installation Guidelines
The SC-ADT 8-port and 16-port device may be installed in any single slot of the SpectraComm
shelf or enclosure.
Each SC-ADT 32-port device consists of two attached cards that occupy two adjacent slots in
the SpectraComm 5000 shelf only.
Perform setups, connections, and pre-operation checks in their entirety, as described in this
chapter.
The SC-ADT comes from the factory with only the Modem port Enabled.
Note
IMPORTANT SECURITY PRECAUTION:
Make sure to change the default password at the Craft port before connecting the external or internal modems
to the network.
Note
For more information on any SpectraComm shelf or enclosure, refer to associated manuals listed on the
inside front cover of this document and provided on the GDC Publications CD.
