Cleaning and Labeling Sample Tubes

Sample tubes and filler rods must be clean and dry before samples are added and
weighed. The following procedures are recommended. Refer to Table 2-1 for a
list of materials needed to clean and weigh sample tubes.

1.
Turn on the drying oven used for heating the sample tubes and filler rods (if
used) and set the temperature to 110
2.
Check the reservoir of the ultrasonic cleaning unit to make sure it is clean.
3.
Use 5 grams of Alconox (or other suitable detergent) per 500 mL of warm
water. Fill the reservoir of the ultrasonic unit with enough water to cover the
sample tubes and filler rods. Add the detergent and make sure the detergent
is dissolved before placing the sample tubes and filler rods into the water. If
too much detergent is used, it may be difficult to rinse from the sample
tubes.
4.
Fill the sample tubes with warm water and place them in the reservoir of
the ultrasonic cleaning unit. Place the filler rods (if used) in the reservoir
also. Turn on the ultrasonic cleaning unit and clean the sample tubes for ap-
proximately 15 minutes.
