Design of the Active Line Module and Motor Module

The Active Line Module / Motor Module has three phases. For the number of IGBTs connected
in series N=2, each phase comprises five PowerCards. A PowerCard is equipped with two
neutral point diodes. Each of the other PowerCards has two power semiconductors that can be
switched off (IGBT modules) with integrated freewheeling diodes.
The IGBTs can limit and interrupt a short-circuit current. This means a short-circuit normally
generally results in a stop. This prevents device damage.

Operating principle

A constant DC-link voltage for the Motor Module is generated from the line voltage. The Motor
Module provides the power for the connected motor via the DC-link voltage.
The DC link capacitors smooth the voltage and stop the energy in the DC link. The DC link
capacitors are maintenance free and self-healing. The device is switched off when the circuit
breaker is disconnected/opened. The DC link is discharged by means of balancing resistors.
