Maintenance Port Interface

The Maintenance Port Interface (MPI) can be used to configure the system, provide installation
status information, and update system software/firmware. The MPI should be used by qualified
installation personnel to configure and update the system.
MPI functionality is provided through the Ethernet Interface via Telnet (and other port
applications), the USB interface, or Serial Port 5 on the FDL-DB Dual Band Series DB-62
connector. The preferred MPI connection should be via Wi-Fi using the optional external Wi-Fi
module using the ADS-B MPI application. If a Wi-Fi Module is not connected an Ethernet or
USB connector should be mounted in the aircraft for convenient wired MPI access.
Use of UART serial port (5) should be avoided since these ports can typically be connected to
other aircraft equipment unless installation limitations force the use of a UART port. When a
UART port is used, a female DB-9 connector should be mounted in the aircraft for convenient
MPI access to a standard RS-232 interface meeting the specifications of TIA/EIA-232-F,
Interface Between DTE and DCE Employing Serial Binary Data Interchange.
If the UART port is configured and connected to other aircraft equipment, the MPI can still be
accessed if the configured device is not actively connected. An inline connector is
recommended to be installed between the devices and used to temporarily disconnect the
configured device and permit external MPI access.
The figure below shows an example of Port 5 connecting to a standard female DB-9 (DE-9F)
RS-232 connector as an inline connection or dedicated MPI port. This allows any other
standard RS-232 device to communicate with the FDL-DB Series equipment.

The MPI connector can be mated to an off-the-shelf RS-232 to USB converter or a battery
powered Serial-to-Wi-Fi MPI Module (P/N 87710-00) for configuration and troubleshooting.
