Construction and function

Print head

The print head works with piezo technology. Ink channels are behind the nozzle plate.
The ink circulate in the ink channels by the capillary effect. Each ink channel consists of
piezo crystals that contract by an electrical impulse, pressing ink against the nozzle
plate. The nozzle plate forms the ink into individual drops that are ejected onto the
printing surface. When the drops exit the print head, a suction pressure is generated that
pulls more ink from the ink system. The surface tension of the ink present directly at the
nozzles prevents ingress of air into the ink channels. Please note that the print head
must be protected from strong vibrations. Strong impacts may lead to disruption of the
surface tension and ingress of air into the head.
The nozzle plate consists of 4 rows with 384 nozzles each, which result 1536 nozzles
with 360dpi resolution. The nozzle row A is located on the right when looking at the
nozzle plate.
The nozzles are sensitive to pressure and scratches. Therefore they may be wiped off
with the special foam cleaning pads lightly and without pressure.

Ink system

The ink system consists of an ink tank that is filled with ink. The ink content is max.
700ml. If the ink content is less than 200ml, an empty ink message is displayed (ink LED
turns red). Only then a new 500ml ink bottle can be screwed into the system. The ink
bottle empties completely and can be removed again.
There are two pumps in the ink system for ink flow and ink return. These run during
operation continuously and are controlled by a pressure sensor in the print head. A
continuous ink circulation is formed. This guarantees that the correct pressure is always
available at the nozzles and that air and dirt are removed behind the nozzles.
If air enters the nozzles as a result of a vibration, it is automatically removed.
The pressure control allows the print head to be positioned independently of the ink
system. The head can be mounted higher or lower than the ink system.
When switched off, ink is sucked out of the head so that no ink can leak from the head.
To do this, the system must be shut down before switching off the mains voltage.
