Fitting Simplex Connectors to Plastic FO Cable
Simplex Connectors
Each optical link module (OLM) is shipped with eight simplex connectors. The simplex connectors
can be fitted easily without special tools. Simplex connectors cannot be ordered separately.
Figure 27:

The simplex connectors do not provide strain relief. If there is a longer section of
cable free at the end of the cable, it is advisable to secure the cable mechanically as
close as possible to the interface.
When laying the FO cable, do not pull on the plug.
FO connectors are adversely affected by dirt and damage to the face of the cable.
The simplex connector can only be used with plastic fiber-optic cords with a diameter of 2.2 mm.
Two simplex connectors can be assembled to create a duplex connector. This is advisable when
using duplex cables in star and bus topologies.
Figure 28:
Duplex Connector
Two simplex connectors can be assembled together to create a duplex connector. The back part of
the connector is not folded back but rather both connectors are pressed together as shown in the
figure. This type of assembly is preferable for bus and star optical networks compared with the
separate installation of two simplex connectors.
The following tools are required or recommended:
Stripping pliers for inner conductors with 1mm
A sharp knife
A smooth flat working surface (approximately 10 cm x 10 cm)
Clean, 600 grit abrasive paper
Make sure that when you are removing the jacket from the plastic fiber-optic cord, neither
the fiber nor the cladding are damaged.
The procedure is shown in detail on the following page.
