The C 2000 calorimeter system is a precision measuring instrument for routine de-
termination of gross calorific values of solid and liquid substances. Exact measure-
ments are only possible, however, if the individual steps of the experiment are fol-
lowed carefully. The procedure as it is described in Chapter 1 "For your safety" and
in the following sections must therefore be followed precisely.

Substances of which the combustion behavior is not known must be examined for

their combustion behavior before combustion in the decomposition vessel C 5010,
C 5012 or C 62 (danger of explosion). If you are burning XQNQRZQ VDPSOHV, leave
the room or NHHS D VDIH GLVWDQFH between you and the calorimeter.

A few points must be observed in reference to the substances to undergo combus-

tion. Normally, solid substances can be burned directly in powder form. Substances
that burn rapidly (for example benzoic acid) must not be burned in loose form.
Benzoic acid must only be burned in the form of pellets! Combustible dust and pow-
der must be compressed into pellets before combustion. Oven-dry dust and powder
such as wood chips, hay, straw, etc. burn in an explosive manner! They must be
moistened first! Readily combustible liquids with a low vapor pressure must not be
come in direct contact with the cotton thread (for example tetramethyl dihydrogen
disiloxan)!
