Established hypertension (high blood pressure) is defined as having a systolic
value of at least 140 mmHg and/or a diastolic value of at least 90 mmHg.
In general, low blood pressure (hypotension) is defined as a systolic value
below 105 mmHg and a diastolic value of 60 mmHg. However, the threshold
between normal and low blood pressure (hypotension) is not as accurately
specified as the threshold for high blood pressure (hypertension). Hypotension
may be associated with symptoms such as dizziness, fatigue, tendency to faint,
visual disturbances or high pulse rate. In order to ensure that hypotension or
the corresponding symptoms are not attendant symptoms of serious illness, a
doctor should be consulted in case of doubt.
Constantly elevated blood pressure significantly increases the risk of
developing other medical conditions. The physical consequences of high
blood pressure, e.g. heart attack, stroke and organ damage, are the most
common causes of death worldwide. Daily blood pressure monitoring is
therefore an important measure that can help to protect you from these
risks. You should discuss this with your doctor, especially if you have
frequently elevated or borderline blood pressure values (see page 49).

4. Information about the ECG

Excitatory processes in the heart can be assessed using an electrocardiogram. A
contraction of the heart muscle is always caused by an electrical stimulus. The
resulting changes in the voltage can be detected on the surface of the body and
their course can be recorded and graphed.
The Veroval
ECG and blood pressure monitor is a single-channel ECG that can
®
detect different arrhythmias.
The basic recording and assessment is carried out by the Veroval
pressure monitor. The device automatically evaluates whether the heart rhythm is
too fast (Fig. 3), too slow (Fig. 2), irregular (Fig. 5 and 6), associated with pauses
(Fig. 4) or normal (Fig. 1). You will see a clear symbol on the display showing the
evaluation immediately after the measurement (more information about the sym-
bols used can be found in Chapter 7 Recording an ECG).
