Cause
At too slow idle, turbocharger
won't turn. Turbine seal leaks oil
seen as blue smoke.
Engine oil wrong type or
viscosity or unauthorized oil
additives used.
Restriction in duct between air
cleaner and turbocharger.
Restriction or faulty check valve
in turbocharger oil lines.
Engine malfunction allowing oil
to enter exhaust (rings, pistons,
valves, etc.)
Pressure relief valve fails to
open.
Exhaust bypass valve
improperly adjusted.
Restriction in duct between
compressor and engine intake
manifold.
Restriction in duct between air
cleaner and turbocharger.
Restriction in engine exhaust
system after turbocharger.
Restriction in engine intake or
exhaust manifold.
Heavy carbon build-up behind
turbine wheel.

Remedy
Increase idle speed.
Refer to engine manufacturer's
maintenance manual.
Remove restriction.
Remove restriction or replace
defective check valve.

Recalibrate, overhaul or replace
