TROUBLE
High oil temperature.
(cont)

Excessive oil consumption.

Poor acceleration.

PIPER AIRCRAFT

AIRPLANE MAINTENANCE MANUAL
CAUSE
Failing or failed bearing.
Defective temperature gauge.
Defective oil cooler lines.
Low grade of oil.
Failing or failed bearings.
Worn piston rings.
Incorrect installation of
piston rings.
Failure of rings to seat (new
nitrided cylinders).
Leaking oil seal in turbocharger,
180T only.
Leaking or damaged oil lines.
Idle mixture too lean.
Incorrect fuel air mixture.
Worn control linkage or
restricted air cleaner.
Ignition defective.
Malfunctioning turbocharger,
180T only

REMEDY
Examine sump for metal particles.
If found, overhaul engine.
Replace gauge.
Check inside of oil lines for
obstruction flush out lines and
oil cooler.
Fill with oil conforming to
specifications.
Check sump for metal particles.
Install new rings.
Install new rings.
Use mineral base oil. Climb to
cruise altitude at full power and
operate at 75% cruise power
setting with high oil temperature
until oil consumption stabilizes.
Check for oil in turbo exhaust.
Replace turbocharger.
Replace item.
Readjust mixture.
Service carburetor.
Tighten loose connections;
and/or service air cleaner.
Check ignition cables, plugs,
timing and magnetos.
Check operation and listen for any
unusual noises. Check overboost
valve and exhaust system for
defects. Tighten loose
connections.
