The Explorer and Mountaineer use a revised Differential Pressure Feedback (DPFE) Exhaust Gas Recirculation
(EGR) system. The system functions in the same manner as the conventional DPFE system. The various system
components, however, have been combined into a single component called the EGR System Module (ESM).
The ESM bolts directly to the intake manifold, with a metal gasket between the two components forming the
measuring orifice. Conventional DPFE systems have an orifice located in the tube leading to the EGR valve. The
new arrangement makes it possible to relocate the pickup ports used to measure EGR flow.
