Driveline Indexing
Indexing the Rear of the Rear Driveshaft
Always index the driveshafts before removal to avoid creating a vibration. Indexing the Explorer and
Mountaineer front and rear driveshafts is done using the same procedure as the 2003 MY Explorer and
Mountaineer.
1. Put the vehicle in NEUTRAL and raise it on a hoist.
2. Index-mark the rear axle pinion flange to the driveshaft flange.
3. Index-mark the rear driveshaft and the extension housing. Before removing or reinstalling the driveshaft,
make sure these marks are aligned. Do not allow the transmission output shaft to rotate before realignment.
The purpose of this step is to maintain alignment between the yoke and output shaft.
NOTE: Repeat the procedure for the front driveshaft.
