Identifying 4-Channel and 3-Channel ABS Systems
4-Channel Rear Speed Sensor
The Explorer and Mountaineer four-wheel disc brake system is available with two different ABS systems: a
standard 3-channel system and an optional 4-channel system.
The four-channel system is a requirement of stability assist/traction control.
A vehicle equipped with a 3-channel system does not have stability assist/traction control.
There are two ways to quickly identify the type of system with which the vehicle is equipped. First, look for the
stability assist button on the center console. Second, look at the rear wheel speed sensor.
– The four-channel system uses a wheel speed sensor on each half shaft.
– The three-channel system retains the wheel speed sensor on the differential.
A vehicle equipped with a 3-channel system does not have stability assist/traction control.
