SMART2 Operation Figure 7: Terrain Compensation – Pitch If terrain compensation is enabled, the SMART Antenna determines the roll and pitch angles and corrects the position data before it is forwarded to the user equipment. In the example shown in Figure 6: Terrain Compensation – Roll on the previous page, the roll angle is 10 degrees, so the position correction that needs to be applied is 61 cm.

Save the Terrain Compensation configuration data. Mount the SMART Antenna The SMART Antenna must be mounted as close to the center of the vehicle as possible, as illus- trated in Figure 8: SMART Antenna Installation below.
  • Page 30 SMART2 Operation The SMART Antenna must be rigidly secured to the vehicle to minimize errors due to vibration and motion. Set the SMART Antenna Height and Enable Terrain Compensation The height measurement should be made while the vehicle has the correct tire pressure and is parked on a hard-packed and level surface.
  • Page 31: Configuring Terrain Compensation Using Nmea Command

SMART2 Operation Changes in tire pressure over time can potentially cause errors in Terrain Com- pensation. This is because the height of vehicle can vary with tire pressure. Leveling the Terrain Compensation Sensor The vehicle must be parked on flat ground when the level command is sent to the SMART Antenna.

  • Page 33: Logging Using Novatel Connect

NovAtel Connect is a computer program used to configure and monitor NovAtel receivers. The Logging Control Window in NovAtel Connect provides an interface to configure logging and to collect logs from the receiver. The collected logs can be output to one of the receiver com- munication ports or stored on the computer running NovAtel Connect.
  • Page 34: Selecting The Logs To Collect

The destination determines where the log is sent. The log can be sent to any communication port on the receiver or a file on the computer running NovAtel Connect. If a communication port is selected, ensure that a device to receive the log is connected to that port.

Chapter 4 SMART2 CAN Bus The SMART2 supports the transmission of NMEA2000 messages over the CAN bus. By default, CAN is disabled on the SMART2. Critical CAN configuration parameters such as Para- meter Group Numbers (PGNs), addresses and priorities are system-specific and must be expli- citly configured.

  • Page 39: Address Claim Procedure

Chapter 4   SMART2 CAN Bus 4.2.5 Address Claim Procedure To become operational on the CAN bus, a SMART2 must claim a J1939 address. The preferred address and a range of alternative addresses are specified using the J1939CONFIG command. When a configured receiver is placed on bus, it may make multiple attempts to claim an address.
  • Page 40: Chapter 5 Built-In Status Tests

Chapter 5 Built-In Status Tests The Built-In Status Test monitors system performance and status to ensure the receiver is oper- ating within specifications. The test detects an exceptional condition and informs the user through one or more indicators. The receiver status system is used to configure and monitor the indicators: 1.
