CRS-311 1:1 Redundancy Switch
Introduction
When configuring the overall system using the CRS‐305 RMI and CRS‐316 TMI modules,
however, you must be careful to avoid networking loops. For example, either of the
following configurations is supported:
•
Configuration #1:
o Connect port "1" of each Network Processor to the appropriate RMI/TMI Modem
side "Ethernet" port.
o Connect the traffic data to the CRS‐316 User side "Ethernet" port. Connect port "2"
of the primary NP to port "2" of the backup NP via a crossover cable.
o No other connections are required for NP ports "3" and "4".
•
Configuration #2:
o Connect port "1" of each Network Processor to the appropriate RMI/TMI Modem
side "Ethernet" port.
o Connect the traffic data to the CRS‐316 User side "Ethernet" port, as per
Configuration #1.
o Connect port "2" of the primary NP and port "2" of the backup NP to a common
Ethernet switch, which in turn shares a connection to an external network
management device.
o Use the external network management device to monitor both modems and to
make configuration changes to the primary modem.
Other variations of the above configurations are possible. However, a configuration that is
not allowed is the connection between the two NPs via a crossover cable while also
connecting both NPs to a common external switch. This would result in a networking loop.
2. CRS‐311 with 4‐Port (Multi‐port) Ethernet: The CRS‐311, using SLM‐5650/5650A modems
equipped with the optional Network Processor (NP) Interface Module, may be configured
with the CRS‐505 RMI and CRS‐515 TMI for multi‐port (1 to 4 ports) Ethernet traffic. Figure
1‐6 shows the block diagram for this configuration.
Note the following restrictions, depending on the Ethernet traffic mode employed:

In Ethernet Router Mode, Ethernet "Port 1" on the CRS‐311 must be used as a
minimum. This is a mandatory requirement, since "Port 1" on the CRS‐311 RMI/TMI
allows the modems to share parameters. Optionally, "Port 2" through "Port 4" can be
used, as needed, for additional user traffic connections.
•
In Ethernet Bridge Mode, Ethernet "Port 2" through "Port 4" on the CRS‐311 can be
used. However, "Port 1" MUST NOT be used, since "Port 1" is designated specifically for
Ethernet Router Mode.
