S ta rtin g and T u rn in g o ff th e E ngine
E ngage pa rkin g brake b e fore s ta rt­
ing the engine.
M ove g e a rs h ift lever to neutral
(sele cto r lever p o s itio n s "P " o r " N "

Cold Engine
T urn key in ste e rin g lo c k to p o s i­
tio n 2. C harge in d ic a to r and pre­
g lo w in d ic a to r lam p m ust com e on.
The p re g lo w process starts. W hen
the p re g lo w in d ic a to r goes out, the
en gine is ready fo r sta rtin g .
A m b ie n t T em perature
e xce e din g 0° C/ +32° F:
T urn key in ste erin g lo c k c lo ckw ise
to the stop. Do n o t depress a c c e l­
erator. Release key o n ly w hen the
engine is firin g regularly.
A m b ie n t T em perature
be low 0° C l +3 2 ° F:
Depress a cc e le ra to r and c lu tc h ped­
al (if ap p lica b le ) to the flo o r. Turn
key in steering lo c k c lo ckw ise to the
stop. Release key o nly w hen the en­
gine is firin g re g u la rly and back o ff
a c ce le ra to r slow ly.
Do n o t in te rru p t the sta rtin g p ro c ­
ess. If the e n g in e is very co ld it is
possible th a t it w ill fa il to s ta rt on
su b se qu e n t attem pts.

Hot Engine
T urn key in ste ering lo c k clo ckw ise
to the stop and sta rt en gine im m e d i­
ately w ith o u t depressing the accel­
e ra to r. Release the key as soon as
the e n g ine is firin g regularly.
Turning off
T u rn key in steering lo ck to p o si­
tio n 0 and rem ove o n ly w hen the
ve h icle has stopped.
S h o u ld the e n g in e c o n tin u e to op e r­
ate w ith th e key in ste ering lo ck
p o s itio n 0, refer to page 60.
W ith very high c o o la n t te m p e ra ­
tu re s (e.g. a fte r d riv in g on m ountain
passes), do n o t s h u t dow n the en­
g ine im m e d ia te ly but a llo w it to run
at s lig h tly increased idle speed fo r
a n o th e r 1 - 2 m in ute s a p p ro x i­
m ately.
Notes
Due to th e insta lled sta rte r n o n ­
repeat unit, the key in the steering
lo c k m ust be returned to 0 po sition
before m aking a new sta rtin g at­
tem pt.
Observe th e oil pressure gauge im ­
m ediately a fte r s ta rtin g . In a very
c old e ngine the oil pressure w ill o n ­
ly rise slow ly, som e tim e a fter the
e ng ine has started. Do not speed up
the engine before pressure is regis­
tered on the pressure gauge.
The charge in d ic a to r lam p m ust go
o u t as soon as the e n gine has
started.
If th e p re g lo w in d ic a to r fa ils to lig h t
up, the p re g lo w system is defective
and sh ould be repaired at a
MERCEDES-BENZ service station at
the e a rlie st p ossib le date.
In areas w here tem p e ra tu re s fre ­
q u e n tly d ro p be lo w - 1 8 ° C/0° F, we
recom m end th a t a b lo ck heater is
installed. Every MERCEDES-BENZ
service sta tio n w ill advise you on
th is subject.
