5.2 Ethernet Connection Methods

5.2.01 Direct Wired Connection to a Single Computer

5.2.02 Wireless Connection to an iPad, Tablet, Laptop, or
Netbook Computer
This chapter describes how to operate the model 7230 using the built in web control
panels via the Ethernet interface, and discusses its capabilities when used in this
way. Chapter 6 provides similar information for when the unit is operated remotely
by commands sent via the Ethernet, USB, or serial interfaces.
In order to use the built in web control panels, the instrument must be connected to
an Ethernet network, it must be possible to access this same network from the
computer that will be used to operate it, and the instrument's IP address must be
known. The following sections describe four different configurations that allow this;
use whichever is appropriate to your requirements.
This is the method described in section 2.2.02 in which the model 7230 is operated
using its default static IP address of 169.254.150.230 It has the advantage of
simplicity but the disadvantage that the controlling computer does not have access to
other network resources or the internet.
With this configuration, it is possible to add internet access to the computer by
adding a second Ethernet interface, either internal or via a USB-Ethernet adaptor,
and connecting this second port to an Ethernet network that has internet access.
However the model 7230 will still only be able to be controlled from the original
computer.
To operate the instrument from a wireless device, such as an iPad, you will need a
wireless router that includes a DHCP server. These are widely available from
electronics stores and there are many different suppliers. The following procedure
uses a TP-Link Model TL-MR3020, but the same principles can be applied to using
routers from other manufacturers. Proceed as follows:
1) Unpack the wireless router and follow the instructions supplied with it to
connect it to the local line power.
2) Set the switch on the side of it to WISP (Wireless Internet Service Provider)
3) Turn the router on. After a short delay its wireless network will be activated.
4) Using the wireless device that you want to use to control the model 7230, such as
an iPad, laptop, or smartphone, find the wireless network that you have just
created. For the TP-Link Model TL-MR3020 the default wireless network name
is TP-LINK_POCKET_3020_XXXXXX (where XXXXXX is the last six
characters of the router's MAC address), as shown in figure 5-1 below
