9.6 Subnet Based VLANs

Subnet based VLANs allow you t o group t raffic int o logical VLANs based on t he source I P subnet you
specify. When a fram e is received on a port , t he Swit ch checks if a t ag is added already and t he I P
subnet it cam e from . The unt agged packet s from t he sam e I P subnet are t hen placed in t he sam e
subnet based VLAN. One advant age of using subnet based VLANs is t hat priorit y can be assigned t o
t raffic from t he sam e I P subnet .
For exam ple, an I SP ( I nt ernet Services Provider) m ay divide different t ypes of services it provides
t o cust om ers int o different I P subnet s. Traffic for voice services is designat ed for I P subnet

DESCRIPTION
GVRP ( GARP VLAN Regist rat ion Prot ocol) is a regist rat ion prot ocol t hat defines a way for
swit ches t o regist er necessary VLAN m em bers on port s across t he net work.
Select t his check box t o perm it VLAN groups beyond t he local Swit ch.
This field displays t he port num ber.
Set t ings in t his row apply t o all port s.
Use t his row only if you want t o m ake som e set t ings t he sam e for all port s. Use t his row
first t o set t he com m on set t ings and t hen m ake adj ust m ent s on a port- by- port basis.
Note: Changes in this row are copied to all the ports as soon as you make them.
I f t his check box is select ed, t he Swit ch discards incom ing fram es on a port for VLANs t hat
do not include t his port in it s m em ber set .
Clear t his check box t o disable ingress filt ering.
A PVI D ( Port VLAN I D) is a t ag t hat adds t o incom ing unt agged fram es received on a port
so t hat t he fram es are forwarded t o t he VLAN group t hat t he t ag defines.
Ent er a num ber bet ween 1and 4094 as t he port VLAN I D.
Select t his check box t o allow GVRP on t his port .
Specify t he t ype of fram es allowed on a port . Choices are All, Ta g On ly and Un t a g Only.
Select All from t he drop- down list box t o accept all unt agged or t agged fram es on t his
port . This is t he default set t ing.
Select Ta g On ly t o accept only t agged fram es on t his port . All unt agged fram es will be
dropped.
Select Un t a g On ly t o accept only unt agged fram es on t his port . All t agged fram es will be
dropped.
Enable VLAN Tr u nk in g on port s connect ed t o ot her swit ches or rout ers ( but not port s
direct ly connect ed t o end users) t o allow fram es belonging t o unknown VLAN groups t o
pass t hrough t he Swit ch.
Select t his t o allows t his port t o com m unicat e only wit h t he CPU m anagem ent port and
t he port s on which t he isolat ion feat ure is not enabled.
Click Apply t o save your changes t o t he Swit ch's run- t im e m em ory. The Swit ch loses
t hese changes if it is t urned off or loses power, so use t he Sa ve link on t he t op navigat ion
panel t o save your changes t o t he non- volat ile m em ory when you are done configuring.
Click Ca n ce l t o begin configuring t his screen afresh.
