Wheel Brake System

The TS 440 is equipped with the STIHL
Quickstop wheel brake system.
At startup, the wheel brake is engaged.
Before using the machine, the operator
must release the wheel brake.
The wheel brake system is designed to
substitute for the wheel guard where the
wheel guard has been "opened,"
exposing the top portion of the cutting
wheel, by stopping the rotation of the
wheel if kickback occurs and kickback
energies are sufficiently high.
No safety device, including the brake,
can protect an operator in all
circumstances, and proper work
techniques always must be employed to
reduce the risk of severe or fatal injury to
the operator from kickback when cutting
with the guard open.
Among other things, the operator always
should stand outside the cutting plane of
the wheel, i.e., not in a direct line with the
wheel (see illustration), and no portion of
the operator's body should be closer
than a 45° angle to the top of the wheel.
TS 440
In no circumstances should the operator
bend over the abrasive cutting wheel or
position his head or upper body beyond
the front handle of the machine. The
guard should never be adjusted to
positions that direct cutting debris or
sparks toward the operator, other people
in the vicinity or flammable
surroundings.
Checking the wheel brake system
Before starting work
1
Put on gloves and other appropriate
N
protective apparel as recommended
in this manual. See information
under "Proper Clothing" in this
instruction manual
Pull the brake lever (1) toward the
N
front handle and hold it – the cutting
wheel can be turned by hand
Release the brake lever – the wheel
N
brake is engaged – the cutting
wheel cannot be turned by hand
If the cutting wheel can be turned by
N
hand without pulling the brake lever:
Do not work with the cut-off machine
and have the wheel brake system
repaired by an authorized STIHL
servicing dealer before using the
machine
The brake lever must be free from dirt
and debris and move easily when pulled
toward the front handle and when
released. If it does not, take the machine
to an authorized STIHL servicing dealer
for inspection and repair.
Releasing the wheel brake
To release the brake when the
N
engine is running, pull the brake
lever (1) toward the front handle of
the machine and release it – the
wheel brake is released
NOTICE
Always release the wheel brake before
accelerating the engine. High revs with
the wheel brake engaged will damage
the engine, the clutch and the wheel
brake system.
Maintaining the wheel brake system
Like any other brake system, the STIHL
Quickstop experiences wear during use,
and periodic servicing is necessary.
After factory specified levels of use, the
brake will not release when the machine
is started, indicating the need for
service.
