The Main Yard:
The main yard braces (one each side) are of 0.25mm natural thread.
Note: It is important to realise that the braces will pass forward and cross each other i.e. port brace to starboard shroud and
starboard brace to port shroud. It is only the main yard braces that do this, all other braces run port side or starboard side
only.
Referring to
Plan Sheet
10, the standing part of the starboard brace is made fast to the fore mast port 4th shroud, directly
beneath the futtock stave. The running end passes aft and through the starboard 3mm single block held on a pendant (60mm
long) on the end of the main yard. It now passes back and through a 3mm single block lashed to the fore mast port 4th shroud,
directly below the standing end of the brace. From here the running end passes down and is belayed to the cleat on the third
(from the front) swivel gun pedestal (b38). The port brace is mirrored in the same manner.
The Fore Topmast Yard:
The fore topmast yard braces (one each side) are of 0.25mm natural thread as shown on
Plan Sheet
9. The standing end is
made fast to the collar of the main stay approximately 13mm above the eye/mouse as shown. The running end leads forward
and through the 3mm single block held in a pendant (45mm long) on the end of the fore topmast yard. It then passes back and
through the 3mm single block held in a 12mm pendant on the collar of the main stay, 5mm below the standing end of the
brace, it then travels forward and through the 3mm single block (one each side) held in a short pendant to the main stay aft of
the fore yard as shown. From here it passes down and is belayed to the aftermost deck cleat outboard of the galley (b39).
The Main Topmast Yard:
The main topmast yard braces (one each side) are of 0.25mm natural thread as shown on
Plan Sheet
10. The standing end is
secured directly to the outboard end of the main topmast yard as shown. The running end leads forward and through the 3mm
double block secured to the copper eyelet (180) in the after face of the foremast cap, port brace to port sheave and vice versa. It
then passes down and through the fore top lubber's hole and is belayed to the outboard end of the bitts crosspiece (b40).
The Fore Topgallant Yard:
The fore topgallant yard braces (one each side) are of 0.25mm natural thread as shown on
Plan Sheet
9. The standing end is
made fast to the collar of the main topmast stay approximately 5mm above the eye/mouse as shown. The running end passes
up, forward and through the 3mm single blocks held on a pendant (33mm long) on the end of the fore topgallant yard, it then
passes back and through a pair (one each side) of 3mm single blocks secured to the main topmast stay, directly below the
eye/mouse. From here it travels forward and through the 3mm single block (one each side) secured to the copper eyelet (180)
in the after face of the fore top trestletree and down to the deck, where it is belayed to middle deck cleat outboard of the galley
(b41).
The Main Topgallant Yard:
The main topgallant yard braces (one each side) are of 0.25mm natural thread as shown on
Plan Sheet
10. The standing end is
secured directly to the outboard end of the main topgallant yard as shown. The running end passes forward and through the
3mm single block lashed to the aftermost fore topgallant shroud, directly below the futtock stave. It then passes down and is
belayed to the aftermost futtock strop on the fore top (b42).
