Using
Plan Sheet 5
for reference, construct the bowsprit and jib-boom to the dimensions shown. The bowsprit is constructed
from a 162mm length of 6mm dowel. The first 60mm of the bowsprit should remain at 6mm, from this point (60mm from the
end) the dowel should be tapered to run from 6mm down to 3.5mm along its length (102mm).
The jib-boom is constructed from a 115mm length of 3mm dowel. The first 38mm of the jib-boom should remain at 3mm,
from this point (38mm from the end) the dowel should be tapered to run from 3mm down to 2mm along its length (77mm).
Bowsprit Wooldings:
Mark onto the bowsprit (and lower masts when constructed), the positions of the wooldings

be cut into strips of approximately 1.25mm wide and 100mm long. Using diluted PVA glue, wrap the strip of cartridge paper
around the mast, three times to build up sufficient depth, starting and finishing at the same point to give a uniform thickness.
Cut off any excess. Repeat this process for each of the woolding hoops, ensuring that they remain square to the bowsprit /
mast.
Drill a 0.65mm hole into the bowsprit / mast directly below the uppermost hoop of each woolding, and glue the woolding rope
of 0.5mm black thread into this hole. The thread should now be lashed with several turns, in a single layer only, to completely
cover the exposed bowsprit / mast between the hoops. Once completed, seal by brushing on watered down PVA.
Bowsprit Fittings:
Identify and remove the bowsprit cap (55) from the 3mm walnut sheet. Using
holes should be drilled through the bowsprit cap as shown. It is vital to realise that these holes are to be drilled at an angle so
that, when the bowsprit and jib-boom are positioned through the cap and this assembly is fixed onto the model, the bowsprit
cap must be vertical (at right angles to the waterline). When the bowsprit cap has been drilled, the upper and lower edges
should also be tapered to run parallel to the holes drilled and it can then be glued into place on the forward end of the bowsprit
and this forward end of the bowsprit should be sanded back flush to the forward face of the bowsprit cap.
Using
Plan Sheet 5
for reference, the bowsprit bee sheaves (71), jib-boom saddle (72) and spritsail yard saddle (102) should be
identified and secured to the bowsprit as shown.
Note: The slots in the bees should be orientated against the bowsprit to simulate sheaves
should be orientated to the forward end while the sheave on the port bee should be orientated to the after end (Photo 061).
9 stop cleats should be constructed from 1.5x1.5mm walnut. Each stop cleat should be 5mm long and shaped as shown

Painting the Bowsprit:
The bowsprit and jib-boom should be stained walnut and the area of each, between the bowsprit cap and the forward end of the
second pair of stop cleats painted dull black. This includes the bowsprit cap, bees, jib-boom saddle, spritsail yard saddle and
the first pair of stop cleats (Photo 061).
