Using
Plan Sheet 2, 'Inner Bulwark Fittings'
should be cut so that it has a vertical length of approximately 20mm (this will be trimmed back when fitted in conjunction with
the stove) and the angled length should be approximately 10mm. Once complete the chimney should be painted matt (metal)
black.
Identify and remove one mast coat
locating hole in the deck, a length of 6mm dowel should be used to determine the correct position. With the mast coat
temporarily positioned the galley assembly can also be temporarily positioned, the back of the galley assembly faces forward
on the model and should be positioned flush against the after point of the mast coat, ensuring the galley assembly is both
square and central athwartships. With the galley assembly temporarily positioned its location should be noted onto the deck
and the assembly removed.
The galley stove can now be permanently fitted bearing in mind the following points:
1.
Using your noted position of the galley assembly, the stove is positioned centrally athwartships within the galley.
2.
Using your noted position of the galley assembly, the back of the stove (orientated toward the front of the ship) is
to be positioned so that it is 2mm from the inner surface of the galley assembly.
When you are happy with the positioning the galley stove can be fitted.
The galley can now be re-positioned over the galley stove and secured to the deck and the galley chimney trimmed and fitted
down through the hole in the galley roof, onto the galley stove below (Photo 047). The mast coat can now be removed and
stored safely for later fitting.
The Bitts:
(Photo 048) Identify the bitts (50) and bitts crosspiece (51) from the 3mm walnut sheet. Referring to
Assembly', assemble the bitts as shown. This assembly can now be temporarily positioned on the model bearing in mind the
following points:
1.
The bitts crosspiece is orientated toward the stern.
2.
The forward most face of the bitts is positioned 13mm forward of the foremast hole in the deck (without the mast
coat fitted).
3.
The bitts are to be fitted squarely and centrally athwartships.
4.
The bitts should be vertical.
5.
Dome headed pins (183) should be fitted to the base of the bitt uprights in a similar manner to the swivel gun
pedestals to facilitate pinning the bitts onto the deck.
Using the instructions on page 34 for reference, it is of great benefit to cut and shape the bowsprit at this stage as it will need to
be dry fitted together with the bitts (there is no need to fit the jib-boom, cap or other bowsprit fittings, you need only to cut and
shape the bowsprit itself). With the bowsprit cut and shaped it can now be temporarily positioned on the model, in order to do
this it will be necessary to open out the foremost point of the bulwarks to allow the bowsprit to seat down flush onto the walnut
stem.
With the bitts assembly temporarily pinned in place, run the bowsprit back up flush to the forward face of the bitts. The
inboard end of the bowsprit should be bevelled, as shown on
whilst following the angle introduced by the walnut stem against which it rests.
With the bowsprit correctly shaped and seated against both the deck and the bitts, its area of contact with the bitts should be
noted. Both the bitts and bowsprit can now be removed and it will be necessary to drill a 1mm hole through the bitts and into
for reference, the galley chimney should be cut from 4mm dowel. The chimney
