the bowsprit, as shown, to accept a length of 1mm brass rod. The rod should be glued into the bowsprit but not the bitts and it
should be trimmed flush to the after face of the bitts. The bowsprit can now be put safely aside until required for fitting later.
Identify, and paint matt (metal) black, four bitt brackets (127) from the 0.9mm brass etch sheet. Each bracket should be bent
through 90 degrees at their mid point, such that the raised bolt details are rotated in towards each other. The brackets can now
be glued onto the forward and after faces of the bitt uprights, flush with their bottom edge so that, when the bitts are located
onto the deck, the brackets will also fit flush to the deck.
The bitts assembly can now be pinned and glued into place on the model and four belaying pins (197) can be inserted into their
locating holes in the bitts crosspiece.
Deck Cleats:
Identify, and paint matt (metal) black, ten small cleats (174). Referring to
holes and glue the cleats into position three either side of the galley and four around the after quarters of the main mast locating
hole orientated as shown.
Eyelets:
Identify, and paint matt (metal) black, ten copper eyelets (180). Referring to
'Eyelet Locations Between Foremast and
and around the base of the fore mast. All of the 'eyes' should be orientated to run fore-and-aft.
Scuppers:
Identify, and paint matt (metal) black, ten scuppers
Hull
Fittings', the scuppers should be secured to the outer hull as shown, each at a distance of 1.5mm below the wale. When
dry, the area inside the scupper can be painted dull black to simulate a hole. It will be of benefit, for the positioning of the
scuppers, to use PVA wood glue rather than cyanoacrylate.
Channels and Lower Sheer Rail:
The channels intersect the lower sheer rail and as such it will be necessary to temporarily fit the channels at this stage.
Identify and remove the fore mast channels (83) and main mast channels (84) from the 1.5mm walnut sheet. Referring to
Sheet 3, 'Channels and
Chainplates', you should notice that the channels have a very definite forward and after end as
determined by the spacing between the 'notches' in their outboard edges.
The foremast channels, one per side, are fitted bearing in mind the following points:
1.
The upper surface of the channel will be flush with the lower edge of the second and third gunports (Photo 049).
2.
The forward edge of the channel will be positioned 4mm forward of the after edge of the second gunport.
3.
The inboard face of the channels should be flush against the outer hull planking; due to build differences some
minor shaping of the inner face of the channel may be required.
4.
With the channel correctly positioned and orientated the 'notches' in the outboard face, which will later hold the
shroud deadeyes in place, should not interfere with the gunports.
When you are happy with the positioning of the fore mast channels they should be removed and, using
'Channels and Chainplates'
pins (183) (with the dome heads removed) into these holes allowing the pointed end of the pin to protrude by 2mm. The
channels can now be re-positioned noting the location of the pins and 0.65mm locating holes for the pins should be drilled into
the hull (Photo 050).
Note: The positions for the pins should be drilled no deeper than 2mm – if you drill deeper than this you risk breaking through
the inner hull planking.
The fore mast channels can be left temporarily fitted at this stage.
The main mast channels, one per side, are fitted bearing in mind the following points:
1.
The upper surface of the channel will be flush with the lower edge of the sixth and seventh gunports.
2.
The forward edge of the channel will be positioned 6mm forward of the forward edge of the sixth gunport. This
will result in the after edge of the channel being positioned approximately 2mm aft of the forward edge of the
seventh gunport.
