With the topmast assembled, using
will be formed from 1.5x1.5mm walnut and when the topmast is 'shipped' it will sit down onto the top surface of the lower
mast top trestletrees to hold the topmast at the correct height, as such its positioning is critical.
Note: Only pre-drill the locating hole at this stage, do not fit the fid or the topmast will not pass through the mast cap. The fid
is made from 1.5x1.5mm walnut cut to a length of 8mm.
Identify the fore topmast trestletrees (97), fore topmast crosstrees (with hole) (98) and fore topmast crosstree (without hole)
(99) and, referring to
Plan Sheet
positioned to the middle of the assembly.
At this stage, put the fore topmast and top assembly to one side; do not glue them to one another.
Fore Topgallant Mast:
Using
Plan Sheet 4
for reference, make up the fore topgallant mast to the dimensions given as follows:
The fore topgallant mast is made up in one part of 3mm dowel cut to a length of 117mm. The first 24mm should remain at
3mm but from this point (24mm from the base) to the top (93mm) should be tapered from 3mm to 2mm along its length.
With the topgallant mast assembled, using
fid will be formed from 1.5x1.5mm walnut and when the topgallant mast is 'shipped' it will sit down onto the top surface of
the topmast top trestletrees to hold the topgallant mast at the correct height, as such its positioning is critical.
With all three sections of the foremast constructed, the mast as a whole can be assembled.
Identify the foremast cap (37) and fore topmast cap (54). Dry fit the fore top and foremast cap to the lower mast. Do not
secure. Now dry fit the topmast, up through the cap, insert the fid and position it down onto the trestletrees. Dry fit the topmast
top, topmast cap and topgallant mast in a similar manner. None of the individual components (lower mast, topmast, topgallant
mast, caps & tops) should be glued to one another at this stage.
With everything dry fitted together, manoeuvre the topmast to run parallel and in-line vertically with the lower mast, at the
same time, the lower top should remain parallel to the waterline, i.e. not perpendicular to the mast. When you are happy with
the alignment, glue the lower mast, lower top, cap, fid & topmast securely in position.
Note: Although the lower top must remain parallel to the waterline and as such not perpendicular to the mast, this is not true
for the main mast cap. The cap should be fitted perpendicular to the mast and as such not parallel to the waterline.
This process should be repeated with the topmast, topmast top, cap, fid and topgallant mast.
Note: As with the lower top and main mast cap, the topmast top should be fitted parallel to the waterline (and lower top) and
the top surface of the topmast hounds will have to be tapered to achieve this. Also, the topmast cap should be fitted
perpendicular to the mast and not parallel to the waterline.
Note: A 0.5mm hole, to simulate a sheave, should be drilled fore-and-aft through the fore topgallant mast, at a distance of
35mm below the mast head, this will be required when rigging the fore topgallant yard tie.
As noted previously, all of the mast sections are to be stained walnut. The areas of the masts to be painted dull black are as
follows:
1.
The lower masts: from the top edge of the upper most woolding hoop, up to and including the cap, this
incorporates the lower part of the topmasts also.
2.
The topmasts: from the lower edge of the hounds up to and including the cap, this incorporates the lower part of
the topgallant masts also.
3.
The entire assemblies of the lower tops and topmast tops should be painted dull black.
Using
Plan Sheet 5
for reference, make up the yards and booms to the dimensions shown as follows:
Main/Fore Lower Yards:
The main and fore lower yards are identical and should each be constructed in three sections. The centre sections are from
4x4mm walnut each 50mm in length, they should have the 'corners' sanded flat to form octagonal, 8 sided, lengths. The outer
ends are from 4mm dowel, each 75mm in length and tapered along their length from 4mm down to 2.5mm. With the three
section for each lower yard formed they can be pinned and glued together.
