3. Check:
• Air filter element
Damage → Replace.
TIP
The air filter needs more frequent service if
you are riding in unusually wet or dusty areas.
4. Install:
• Air filter element
• Air filter case cover
Air filter case cover bolt
2 Nm (0.2 m·kgf, 1.4 ft·lbf)

Never operate the engine without the air fil-
ter element installed. Unfiltered air will
cause rapid wear of engine parts and may
damage the engine. Operating the engine
without the air filter element will also affect
throttle body synchronization, leading to
poor engine performance and possible
overheating.
TIP
When installing the air filter element into the air
filter case, make sure that the sealing surfaces
are aligned to prevent any air leaks.

CHECKING THE CLUTCH OPERATION

1. Check:
• Clutch operation
Dysfunctional → Check the clutch sys-
tem.
Refer to "CLUTCH" on page 5-44.

WARNING
Before checking the clutch operation,
check the brake system and make sure that
the brake is operating at all times during
PERIODIC MAINTENANCE
the check-up. While checking the clutch
operation, do not rev up the engine.
a. Place the vehicle on a level surface, and
start the engine.
b. Grab the clutch lever and make sure that
you can shift the gear smoothly.
c. Grab the clutch lever and shift to first gear.
d. Operate both the front and rear brakes,
release the clutch lever slowly and make
sure that the engine stops.

PLAY
1. Check:
• Clutch lever free play "a"
Out of specification → Adjust.
Clutch lever free play
5.0–10.0 mm (0.20–0.39 in)
2. Adjust:
• Clutch lever free play

Handlebar side
a. Slide back the rubber cover "1"
b. Loosen the locknut "2".
c. Turn the adjusting bolt "3" in direction "a" or
"b" until the specified clutch lever free play
is obtained.
Direction "a"
Clutch lever free play is increased.
Direction "b"
Clutch lever free play is decreased.
d. Tighten the locknut.
e. Slide the rubber cover to its original posi-
tion.
